Dashing through the snow on an eight dog open sleigh.....dream holiday for my sons 21st birthday. Winter wonderland. Eco cabin chic ..just heaven. Natural fresh food..World class dog sledding taught in an understated fun way. Unique hand crafted reindeer skins to wear sledding...Northern lights on the tundra...Well behaved dogs and puppies patient with complete beginners ..good company and food in the mountain cabins ...and best of all the polar night meant lots of sleep for my family which teenagers love! Trip to the Sami to see the reindeer and lunches around the fire in the polar night...the sky is so clear you can see Mars shinning red....if this isn't heaven I am not sure what is. Just go.

What an amazing experience of a lifetime we had as an extended family of 7. We just loved the lodge ,the warmth extended to us, the food divine in such a cosy atmosphere. The dogs are the main attraction and they clearly pour love and attention into them and they are in turn are well socialised and gentle beings. To Sven, Crystal and staff You are to be congratulated.
We took the 3 day mushing trip and experienced -33C which was a challenge but we all came through fine.
Kenny our guide, you are a star and, with gorgeous Christina you handled us with grace and tolerance when some were about to lose it!!!! That and to organise us with 45 dogs was no mean feet You fed us well in the little house on the prairie. It No Glamping tour out there but oh we have some great stories to tell. Sami reindeer herders popping in for a coffee to warm up , northern lights. Howling with the dogs near full moon. Kenny and Christina went out chopping wood in the barn and made sure we were warm enough when the fires got going.
We returned to the lodge after 2 nights away where wafffles were cooking , fires burning and hot chocolate ready and thawed out. It had been a cold ride back but the moon was out in clear skies and it was a scene out of a movie.
A few nights relaxing after was just perfect and New Year's Eve spent with 2 birthdays with a great cake thank you Crystal . Northern lights appeared again, hot tub steaming, a sauna and rolling in the snow for some. Every box was ticked for us. Oh and Puppies to play with.
The lodge is fabulous, ecologically built and so many hand tooled fixtures to admire.
Clothing wise, the provided gloves nearly did my head in as there are 3 layers and they need to come off to harness the dogs and I freeze quickly. I think my gloves were made for a giant. Hand warmers work well but the foot ones not so well in those temps. Layers worked well and I had a felt face mask that was out of 'Silence of the lambs' but it worked.
Yes we fell off and learned to hang on to our sleds and team. I can recommend this adventure to everyone who wants to experience something a bit different. My family will talk about this for ever.
We found this I August 2016 when we drove through Norway and fell in love with the place. There were carpets of cranberries and blueberries and we could watch the dogs in training and clearly saw this was a special place.
Enjoy!
Unique in this world

We arrived in the dark Norwegian winter- and were shown our room- the warmest coziest, most unique place we have ever stayed in. Most everything in the room , from the reindeer hide and rope hanging chair with a bear fur blanket to the moose antler coat hanger to the carved slate counter and reindeer bone utensils, is hand made and the warm natural tones make you feel as if you are in a story book fantasy world. Then there are the dogs ! Close by are kept 50-60 huskies in the yard ( you can barely hear them occasionally at night) and the dog sled rides and overnight treks are a must. Dog sledding in mid winter is a magical experience that adds to your stay. Dining is in a cozy dining area with other guests and camaraderie can develop quickly.
The staff is very helpful and some of the dinners are unique. Auroras visible on clear nights very close by in the woods. Highly recommended for a unique experience.
Wonderful stay in Engholm Husky lodge

Engholm Husky Lodge is a special place. It is an escape from the world as you know it, to a new land. We came to go Husky dog sledding but we found so much more
The Engholm Lodge is built around the huskies. Crafted over 30 years by Sven, it is now a series of log cabins, a guest kitchen, workshop and dog yard. These dogs are amazing. 55 husky dogs each with their own personality and strengths. They work tirelessly for you on the sled. We had the pleasure of 3 trips out on the trails with them and we were pulled over the river through the forest and back home by these amazing creatures. They howl together in excitement as they wait for the gate to open and another day's adventure to begin. Once they turn the corner and arrive back to the dog yard in the afternoon, they lay in the snow and rest for the evening. Each day we covered approx 26km of terrain through some beautiful deserted wilderness. The quiet surroundings, the soft sound of the sled through the snow and the dogs panting are a special form of meditation. The cold wind and the changing light keeps you focused and alert. The landscape is beautiful and deserted and I felt my body and soul was reset every moment I spent out there
Another reason to come to Karasjok is to see the Northern Lights. In December it is likely that you will catch a glimpse of the electricity-charged neon particles dance on the horizon. We trudged in the snow at midnight to stand on the frozen river behind the lodge and watch for the light display. First there were shooting stars dropping from the sky followed by plumes of green light shining up from the skyline. You think that you are watching city lights until you realise that there is nothing out there in the taiga wilderness
Each wooden cabin is toasty - a fortress from the cold outside. Every last detail of the cabin is perfect. Tables are hand carved from wood and hang from the roof. The beds are handmade and guarantee a great night sleep. Lampshades are made from animal hide while throws, curtains and rugs are reindeer hide refashioned to modern needs.. Our cabin had fast Wifi, a digital radio, a bathroom with shower and a fire. We originally intended to take a trip out to mountain huts as part of the expedition but due to priority for reindeer herd migration and local Sami families in December we came back to the lodge each night instead
An unexpected bonus was the amazing food! Crystal and her staff gather local fresh food every day and made the most wonderful meals each evening. We dined on fish smoked in the smokehouse, homemade nettle soup and pumpkin bread. Breakfast was a feast of fresh fish, cheese and homemade jams to set you up for the day ahead. My favourite (I had many) was the Norwegian brown cheese and I searched in Karasjok to bring some home to Ireland! We packed a lunch to eat on the trail, it was a special treat to toast sandwiches on the open fire during our lunch stop! We got involved in the food preparation and came home with some wonderful new food recipes.
Once the dogs were untied from the sled and the harnesses gathered after our trip, we would sit in the workshop and feast on a âNorwegian biscuitâ - brown cheese and jam sandwiched between 2 digestive biscuits and the freshest tasting water ever. As one of the team would say we ate âuntil you are ashamedâ and this involved going up for seconds and sometimes a third helping!
Dog feeding was one of my personal highlights. They have an impressive diet of vitamins and meat to fuel their muscles for the day ahead. We loaded up the meat wheel barrow and fed each dog carefully according to their condition judged by the dog handlers. In total they would consume over 80kg of meat per day. Itâs no mean feat doing this every evening especially if a storm is howling and the temperatures are -20 degrees! Each dog sleeps in a warm hut overnight and in the morning they come out to howl together as they wake up
I would definitely recommend Engholm as a Winter or Summer trip if you are an adventurous person ready to take on a new challenge
We Looked, Enjoyed, But No Husky Excursion

We spent some time viewing the beautiful hand-made cabins, each one unique and totally unexpected in the middle of nowhere. Enjoyed hearing about and seeing the very docile huskies and the presentation about dog sledding and arctic survival adventures. We had a little snack prepared for our tour. A good unique experience.
