Overall the hostel got the job done. Reception at the desk were so friendly and helpful, regardless of the hour. The hostel was pretty clean, especially the bathrooms. I was in a mixed dorm room; beds were placed so close to door that noise & light was inevitable, even with courteous roommates. Towels, adapter, lockers, etc. all an extra surcharge. Was disappointed that basic security lockers cost 2 euro/day, even if you bring your own padlock. Free breakfast was fine: bread, nutella, cereals, yogurt, butter, and jam, instant coffee and teas.

I had a room on the first floor right next to the bathroom which was flooded due to a leaking shower two mornings in a row. Instead of cleaning up the mess which also went in one half of our room (soaked clothing and suitcases, books and water-damaged phone as there was no chair to put the phone next to the plug) the water continued to be in the bathroom (2cm high with flip flops) and our room until lunch time. the management said their insurance does not cover those incidents and I got a refund of 50 euros which is definitely not enough to buy a new phone. Also, and I quote, the manager said "the fee was a gesture of good will". I also wanted to cancel some nights a month in advance and they were not reasoning and did not let me change the date nor name of the booking, instead I lost 100 euros. Also no room to store things. Would not stay again. Staff is nice though and location great, but thats about the only perks of the hostel.

Only reason it got 3/5 was the location. Dublin is not really big but Avalon hostel was in a very good location and we didn't need to use transportation at all. However, though the stuff was helpful I felt like the hostel was trying to get money from everything. You had to pay for the adapter and the lockers instead of giving a deposit. They also advertised too much some things like tours or pub crawls to a point where it was getting a bit oppressive. Also IMPORTANT and really not convenient: The kitchen was closed from 22.00 till 7.00. It's the first time it happens to me in a hostel. You could ask the stuff to unlock it for you to get something from the fridge but I was coming back at night and couldn't sit and have a fast snack. Also no proper heating in the bathroom and cold water in the showers!

Location is superb. Great value for money. I had a private room en suite. Basic but clean. Bed was comfortable but the room was quite chilly. There was a draught coming in the window. There was a plug-in fan heater provided but it set off the fire alarm the next morning when I was trying to take the chill out of the room. Reasonably quiet for a hostel. WiFi was good in the room. Would definitely stay again but bring warmer PJs!

All acess was made by card, and the kitchen was quite big.
There were people coming in and out at all hours in my room, witch made it hard to sleep, but overall, very good place, security and vibe.
I'll choose Avalon house again, for sure.
