What People are saying

haven of peace

Carol D on 21/05/2017 09:45

Located along the river, my room is spacious and quiet. I go by boat to the village not far and discovers the authenticity of Kerala. Situated not far from the centers of interest of Kerala, I find the evening after my excursions, beauty and calm, the unbelievable Aebi Ayurvedic massages and its family which is at the care for my stay. Thank U I would like never leave ! Very safe, authentic and quiet place.

House boating through natural beautiful back water lake.

This is my experience share with you , that a wonderful house boating you can enjoy in Kerala (Gods own country ) at Allapuza - Kuttanadu. The most specialty is natural wonderful beauty you can enjoyed. Coconut natural Toddy with Sea food is a good experience.

A HAVEN OF PEACE

We have spent 14 days in "Cherivally Backwater Farm House" resort, 23 kms South from Cochin , while we followed an ayurdeva treatment in Matt India. The place is idyllic, peaceful and absolutely relaxing. It is located in the very heart of the backwaters and it enjoys incredible views over the dammed waters that mirror thousands of palm tree and where hundreds of birds fly . Both dawns and sunsets are appaling with the light shifts reflecting on the wáter. From time to time engineless boats cross these waters, providing a completely idyllic image of the place.
The resort consists of a series of bungalows, located on the banks of the channels and surrounded by a porch with some deckchairs that allow you to fully enjoy this beautiful environment . Bedrooms are big, simply but pleasantly furnished. The bathroom is also large and very comfortable, built roofless. The whole of it makes you feel in touch with nature.
Meals are served in the open air, in a kind of dining room by the water . All the guests meet to eat together, which is very entertaining and enriching . Food is plentiful and excelent, carefully cooked by Kumar and Babu , who serve delicious courses from Kerala gastronomy. The family who runs the resort is really friendly and welcoming , always willing to solve any problem or emergency. Their children Abel and Emma cheer up everybody witth their lovely presence and company.
This a marvellous place to rest, to follow ayurdeva treatment , make a boat trip accross the backwaters and spend some days in full touch with nature, far from the city´s stressful life and daily problems. If are so lucky as to go back to Kerala, we will definitely accommodate in this wonderfun place.
Finally, I would like to emphasize the excellent rate price/quality, as well as the devotedness of Eby and his wife to make the stay there unforgettable. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anybody who enjoys the contact with nature and who wishes to rest surrounded by beauty and by a charming family atmosphere.

Nice Corner Room + host albeit a bit busy at times

sadiedaly91 on 24/02/2017 12:59

We booked via AirBnB but I don't think my review is visible so I've pasted it here:

As others have said, Manu is a lovely, warm and hospitable host. It seems more common these days to not even meet your Airbnb host so to have Manu as our 'on site' host was a welcomed change.

Our favourite bits:

- As others have said, the Corner room is spot on. Super clean, comfy bed, shiny bathroom and excellent balcony.

- Manu allowed us to use the fridge, kettle, he helped put a load of washing on, arranged rickshaws for us, suggested some local places to eat and, when asked, (3 days into our 5 day stay), he happily & thoroughly cleaned our room.

- The location is away from the tourist trail of Aleppey & the like. The Corner Room is situated a short canoe ride (provided) over to a small village. It's 20-30min walk to the main road (5min by rickshaw) & about an hour each way to a beach & Catholic community (we rowed ourselves but I guess you could get a ride). It's certainly a more 'local' experience and we enjoyed it.

- The food provided on site is served at a very reasonable price (not astronomically far off local prices for what you get). We had dinner once with about 12 other guests. The food lacked 'kick' for us (possibly made more for western taste), but that's cool. What we did eat was fresh & quite tasty.

Since we're very keen on 'local' food.... there is a nice fish/banana leaf-Thali place on the main Rd + a good Brahmin restaurant (yum Thali & lovely people) next-door to that, (aside from waking, a rickshaw would take 5mins. Unfortunately, bicycles weren't available to rent) + a couple of very local/basic eateries across the river, in the village. Manu can advise, if you're keen.

Other things to note:

- It may have been our misunderstanding but the comfortable corner room isn't actually very private. It's great to see the locals and their boats but it's worth noting that the 'launch zone' for the guests' canoe trips back and fourth to the other side of the river (& Ayurvedic centre) is positioned right next to the bedroom & balcony.

I think it was quite a busy time during our stay & guests peering into our room was a common occurrence during the day. I realise privacy is a rare commodity in India but this is worth keeping in mind - especially when getting out of the shower or lazing in bed with curtains open :)

- The room is actually a part of a larger guesthouse business. I probably wouldn't consider it a homestay / farmstay in the traditional, more modest sense of the word. Current construction is nearly finished and I'm guessing there will be more than 15 rooms (incl the 3 basic boats moored up for rent).

There was a bit of noise from excited backpacker guests at night (it's nice that they can meet up but wasn't really what we were after), and people coming and going but it wasn't too bad.

I wish the owners all the luck in the world and do hope the extra capacity does not ruin the peacefulness that previous guests have enjoyed.

All in all, a nice stay in a wonderful part of the world and we thank Manu again for being a lovely Airbnb host.

Strange, disappointing, but inexpensive visit

We had high expectations for the Back Water Farm House based on the reviews and photos on TA. Yes, the rooms and facilities are basic, as other reviewers have said; that is not why we are giving it 2 stars. The problem is the lack of information at the isolated hotel and feeling of unease that we had while staying.

Examples: No one told us that meals are at set times until the meals happened (8:30am-9:30am for breakfast; 1:00-2:00pm for lunch; 8:00-8:30pm for dinner). There is no written information about the local area or the activities to do, and the owner is kind but not talkative; it would be much easier for the options to be written out. There are no drinks available other than water. When we asked about beer, the owner pointed to a not-too-scale map of where to find a shop selling beer, without telling us that it was actually 3 kilometers away...it was not a good surprise while walking. A young man came up to us at our room without introducing himself or saying anything introductory asking for our passports, copied the information, and left. The interaction was cold and impersonal, and made us feel unwelcome.

Overall, BWFH has a nice location on the water with easy access by boat to the backwaters. If you are looking for an inexpensive place to stay where you can take a boat ride, this might fit the bill. Just be aware of some of these details, which other reviewers have not mentioned. Also, the food was fine but monotonous; we were served the same vegetable curry for 3 consecutive meals.
