Worst Place I have Ever Stayed

Where to start. My daughter was getting married in Chateau Thierry on Saturday 27th May. We decided to go a few days early on the Wednesday to spend time with our future in-laws. We tried to book the Best Western or the Ibis but both were full, so it came down to the Campanile. We were also with my wife's mum and dad. He is 88 years of age, virtually wheelchair bound and chronically diabetic so they got a disability room (room 225) . My daughter and fiancé also joined us and they have written their own review. Everything seemed fine. It was a hot afternoon and we'd driven down from Paris so a nice cold beer seemed like a good idea. We went into the bar to be told we could only have an alcoholic drink with our evening meal and that this was common practice in France. We have had numerous holidays in France over thirty odd years and never come across this "common practice". Alarm bells should have started ringing. At our evening meal we were indeed allowed wine.
The following morning we went for breakfast. The choice was limited and some items had run out eg orange juice, cold meats and milk for the coffee but extra would arrive shortly. They did in dribs and drabs by which time other choices had run out. We persevered and got through it. We went back to our rooms and my in law's opened their door to be hit by a sickening smell of sewage. We went straight away to report it and shortly after someone arrived with a bottle of liquid which he poured into the toilet assuring us that that would solve the problem.
By this time we had also noticed beneath the rim of the toilet in our room was the most disgusting sight which obviously had never been cleaned in months.
So off we went for a tour round. Arriving back in the afternoon the smell was still there. He returned and poured something down the shower waste. This seemed to improve things and we went for our evening meal in town.
The following morning we went for breakfast to find the same situation. Many items waiting to be replenished, including, amazingly for France, coffee. Back to our rooms afterwards and the smell was back in my in-lawâs. It seemed to be related to the shower. The man returned and poured more chemical down the shower waste. Again with room door wide open for 20 minutes things seemed OK.
The following day breakfast was even worse. No croissants (in France), no coffee but warm milk, no orange juice or cold meats thereâ¦not even any coffee cups.- After around 10 minutes we got coffee by which time the milk had run out. About 5 minutes later a few croissants arrived. Still no cups so people were having their coffee in glass tumblers. There were a couple of baguettes but no butter.
Anyway back to our rooms and yes the smell was back in my in-law's room. More chemical and this was Saturday, the wedding day. By this time we had had enough but had to suffer a further night in this grotty place. We were due to spend Sunday night there as well and off to the airport Monday morning. We decided to leave on the Sunday morning instead as we could take no more. On checkout we thought we were told that we wouldn't be charged for my in-law's room. When we checked later all we got was our meal on the first night.
So Sunday we made our way to the airport for a night in the Novotel which was brilliant.
Chateau Thierry is a lovely little town on the banks of the River Marne and doesnât deserve to be besmirched by a place like this.
If you decide to visit do even not consider this place.
Good room at a budget price

Campanile is a fairly good hotel with those on a lean budget. My room was clean, comfortable and decent. Only grip was that the A/C had a limiter on it, so you can't adjust it down comfortably when it's hot outside. But a slider outside can be lowered to block out any morning sun coming your way.
Very dirty hotel

We had three rooms in total at this hotel. One was a disabled room for my grandparents and two standard rooms - one for my parents and one for my fiancé and me. The hotel was very very dirty. On one day (our wedding day in fact!) our bedroom was not cleaned and no fresh towels put in. My grandparents' room smelled permanently of drains. The manager tried to rectify this by putting liquid down the drains but the smell kept returning. Their shower room was disgusting. We were also massively overcharged for breakfast as the hotel does not note down room numbers as standard when someone arrives for breakfast so they assumed all six of us had had it each day. This has now been refunded, although this is not usual practice in any hotel I've ever stayed in! It was also 30+ degrees outside but the air conditioning was not working - the main machine was switched off! The cleanliness is shameful, particularly in the disabled room where one would expect it to be perfect.
Clean and functional!

If you are travelling or on business I suppose it does the job. Personally I like a little more comfort being away from home but this was booked on behalf of myself by a colleague who explained it was well positioned for an early start the next day. Firstly the rooms are like chalets but they are vey clean, have a TV in the room and a good shower. Shutters come down outside to block the sun and the air conditioning is good. The meals are fresh and a good deal is given on rates of the room with breakfast and dinner. Our rate was around 85euro for dinner, bed and breakfast. The place lacks a bit of atmosphere and the bar area is a little basic but it does the job for 1 night only!
Easy to get into town from here and not have to fight the traffic
