Large holiday hotel

John V on 08/10/2017 09:52

The Campo Dell'Oro is a large, multi-story holiday-style hotel just outside of Ajaccio on the main road near the airport. We have a high room with balcony with an expansive view of the sea. The room was spacious and clean. The beach is nice and just a 5 minute walk away by underpass. The kiosk was closed (October seems to be after the beach season, although the weather is still warm). The hotel has plenty of free parking and a very large outdoor pool with lots of seating. The staff at reception and the bar were very friendly and happy to converse in English. The breakfast was of a good standard. The restaurant offered a nice menu and the food was well prepared (but not cheap). It is easy to get to town by car or you can take a bus (1 euro paid on-board) or train (2 euros paid on board). Both terminate at the train station from which you can take an easy stroll to see the sights.

Good but inconvenient location for holiday

We stayed here for three nights on our tour of Corsica and our first impression was that the outside of the hotel needed renovating but once inside, the Reception area is light and bright and welcoming. There are some wonderful pieces of quirky furniture and wall decorations carved out of wood, even the reception desk.

Our bedroom was at the rear of the hotel with a balcony, but didn’t feel like sitting out because of the trees so close by and the view of the staff chalets and the railway line. The trains don’t run too early or too late and were not really a nuisance, they only have two carriages and are infrequent. The lack of a refrigerator was disappointing but the room was spacious and clean. The bathroom was spacious with a wonderful waterfall shower dispensing lots of lovely hot water.

The lovely Breakfast buffet had absolutely everything and was continually being restocked.

Outside are a large terrace, tennis courts, swimming pool and sunbathing area which is quiet and relaxing, and a large free car park. The pool is spotlessly clean and well maintained.

Ricanto Beach is 600 meters from the hotel and accessed by a lift and underpass and up the other side by another lift. The beach bar/restaurant had closed down but five minutes’ walk along be the beach towards Ajaccio is the Tahiti Beach Bar and Restaurant which serves food up to 3 pm.

The hotel is very nice but I feel it is not an ideal beach holiday hotel because of the access, the size of the beach and lack of facilities, but is ideal for its proximity to the airport.

There is a railway station close by where you have to flag down the train to stop and pay the guard 2 Euros to Ajaccio, it is only 2 stops and takes about 10 minutes. To return you must buy your ticket at the ticket office, and press the bell for the train to stop at the ‘Ricanto’ stop (rather like a bus service). The hotel reception has timetables.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor front room with a balcony and sea view.

Good quality airport hotel and very convenient

geckopoo on 25/09/2017 07:04

We stayed here on our first and last nights in Corsica. What a perfectly positioned hotel for late and early flights in and out of Ajaccio. Literally just 3 minutes down the road from the airport, off the first exit of the roundabout (mind you, we had a bit of a kafuffle finding the exit on our first night as it was dark, we were tired and we were still getting used to driving on the 'right-side' of the road with our hired car - it took a couple of u-turns in other roundabouts!). So glad for this hotel though, it is very convenient for newbies to get their bearings upon arrival, without having to compromise on quality of service, comfort and cost. Loved the grand lobby with interesting wooden features and a samurai armour! We were welcomed warmly by the staff who were quite understanding of our faulty french - they all spoke perfect English! With 30 minutes to spare before their restaurant closed, we dashed in and ordered one of the most delicious dinners we've had in Corsica. Duck magret with pears and vegetables, seafood risotto, grilled seabass, all tasty and filling, we were so sad not to be able to have fitted in a dessert. What an introduction, it all augured well for a pleasurable week in this fascinating island. We all collapsed in our comfortable beds after a long flight and slept very well. What fun it was to be woken up by the sound of a train passing under our window at 7:30 (ps we like trains!). It isn't bad really as some previous posts have suggested, one feels part of a civilized world with these sounds! The bathroom was a bit quirky as the wooden door was designed to have holes in them and there were glass panels on the wall which meant the bathroom light came through to the bedroom thus waking whoever was trying to sleep in while the other is in the shower. And oh the shower, wow, this was a treat, a waterfall-type showerhead delivering copious amounts of hot water, love it! Very spacious vanity unit, lots of room to spread out our toiletries if we wanted to - although we didn't have to as we were here only for one night. The absence of a bar fridge didn't really bother us, seems like this is a common thing in Corsican hotels we have stayed in.

On our last night in Corsica we also decided to stay here as we had an early flight out. We checked in early and wandered down to the beach via the subterranean walkway (there's a lift from the end of the carpark). So glad we did this otherwise we would not have enjoyed one of the nicest beach views this side of Ajaccio at sunset. Sitting by the beach with a couple of beers watching the planes land and take off from the runway, listening to the waves roll on to shore and watching the shadows change on the distant genoese tower across the bay, it was bliss! Once again, we enjoyed our last dinner in Corsica in the hotel restaurant - the memory of our first dinner was so good, we had the same dishes all over again, what a winner!

If we came back to Ajaccio again, we'd definitely stay here on our first and last nights. The convenience of its location is unparalleled. And with such lovely and friendly staff and an excellent restaurant, what more can one ask? Highly recommended.

great airport hotel, not suitable for a holiday

MollyB697 on 06/09/2017 19:35

have given this a rating of 2 as although there are lots of good things - room was nice, spacious, clean, lovely bathroom; good reception, helpful staff; nice pool - the fact that it sells itself as somewhere to stay on holiday seems misleading. It overlooks the motorway on one side (and the beach is beyond the motorway - there is an underpass apparently - and while it is nice I am sure, there are so many more beautiful and less badly situated beaches!), and a factory or other industrial building on the other (from our room anyway). There was also an intrusive generator type noise that made it hard to get to sleep. Breakfast not much to shout about. And it was not cheap.

The fact that it is 5mins away from the airport is absolutely ideal and on that basis I would recommend it.

Good, but for this price it should be excellent

The hotel looks very old from outside (needs some new paint), but inside it looks much better. The hotrelroom is good, but nothing specials. I was very disappointed about missing a minibar / fridge inside the room. Our stay was in August and you will need something to cool your water. Very stranged for a 4 star hotel. The shower is very good. If you do not book the see view rooms, your view is a few mobile homes and a train rails. You can hear the train very good, but the complete hotel is not good isolated, you can hear your neighbours very good and all doors on the same floor. But the room was very clean, the restaurant is very good for diner and good enough for breakfast. The staff is very friendly, although I was surprised the woman behind the check-in desk did not speak English very well. But she was stagiair said her name tag, so I hope she will learn soon. The swimming pool is great, but there were not enough beds for this busy time of the year. It is a good hotel, no doubt about it, but very expensive, especially in August. Too expensive for what you get and for a hotel which is a little too far away from down town Ajaccio. The beach in front of the hotel is great, but you cannot rent a sunbed. There is a bar where you can buy drinks and paninis, but that's your only possibility to buy a lunch, because in the whole hotel you cannot buy any food between breakfast and diner. So when you are at the swimming pool and you are a little hungry, you have to walk to the beach. There is no other option nearby. If you decide to stay in this hotel, I advise you to drive to Porticcio. You will be there twice as fast as down town Ajaccio and the restaurants over there are even better. Most of them have their terrace on the beach. And the hotel restaurant is very good as well.
