What People are saying

Girls weekend

heidils2 on 21/01/2018 23:00

We were treated so well from the minute we arrived. The staff were wonderful, the room was comfy, cosy and spotlessly clean as was the whole hotel. Facilities and amenities were top notch and the food was excellent. Overall a wonderfully managed hotel, top class !

It was great to go back

I'd been before on a boys golf trip and was delighted with everything I experienced. I wanted to take my wife as I knew she would love it. We and 3 other couples took advantage of a January deal. The golf on a very decent course is inclusive regardless of whether or not you play. The very good spa is really pleasant and worthwhile. The girls enjoyed the treatments (massage, eyebrows etc). The food is outstanding as is the welcome, the rooms, the staff, the quality etc. Its also an excellent jumping off point to the rest of Cornwall. Can't wait to go back.

Fantastic summer mini break

We stayed here late August 2017 for three nights with our 3 yr old and had a wonderful time. Our daughter enjoyed the activities provided by the childrens club and there was also a falconry display on in the hotel grounds whilst we were there so she got to engage with this also. Generally speaking, the staff were attentive particularly with our daughter and responded well to very minor issues like a broken fan in our room extremely well. We enjoyed the hotel facilities and both the indoor and outdoor poll areas were well maintained. The hotel food was sufficient and the cocktails were very good. The nearest beach is within walking distance but does have steep steps leading to it but the beach is worth the slightly strenuous walk. Our only minor criticism of our stay at Carlyon Bay was that the room was nice but could have been bigger for a family room but despite this we all thoroughly enjoyed out time at Carlyon Bay and would return again.

Fantastic start to 2018

Once again The Carlyon Bay hotel has been a wonderful break for myself and friends. We always visit for the start of the new year - this time it was even better. Great food, attentive and caring staff and wonderful room. We always go for the sea facing for a treat! This year the hotel was immaculate. And how lovely to have free mince pies with our coffee!
The Spa area is always clean with loads of fluffy towels and has plenty of seating and a good sized pool. Very relaxing.
Will be back for the start of 2019 and hopefully during 2018 for a birthday treat.

Could do so much better!

We have loved the Carlyon Bay hotel for many years and often take three day breaks there although it is probably a long time since I left a review.

In 2017 we stayed twice at the hotel, once in January and once in early December. The January visit was pleasant although we were very annoyed not to be able to have the room with a walk-in shower that we had booked. Or at least we could have had it but would have had to put up with a dreadful noise from refurbishments going on on the floor below. No-one warned us of this we were simply shown to the room and had started unpacking when loud drilling and banging began. I think it’s great that the hotel ‘keeps up appearances’ and refurbishes to stay smart, but really guests should be forewarned so that they can choose an alternative room. The assistant manager came to see us and agreed the noise was intolerable so moved us to a different room …. this one was much smaller and without the walk-in shower specified. It was beautifully refurbished but with new chairs were not at all comfortable for whiling away an hour or two. We enjoyed the remainder of this stay although we were not over impressed by the quality of the Table d’Hote dinners.

For the next stay we decided to give ourselves a little luxury and booked one of the two State rooms. This was large and comfortable, although, for one of the most luxurious rooms in the hotel we thought it should have a walk-in shower rather than over-the-bath without even a grab bar to assist getting in and out safely. The bathroom was beautifully appointed and had been refurbished since our last stay in the same room but the bedroom was looking a bit tired, however, we loved the comfy sofa where we could sit and look out at the sea.

On our second day the weather was bitterly cold, just 4C with a chilly wind. We went out for a walk and returned at about 2.00pm, we were cold and looking forward to the warmth of our comfortable room. Well there was not much comfort to be had …. the radiators were stone cold as was the room. I phoned reception thinking there must be some mistake but was told ‘Oh no the heating never comes on before 4.00pm’, ‘But we are cold now’ I replied ‘Ok we’ll send someone up with a heater’. In the meantime I tried to get the large and rather cumbersome air-conditioning unit to throw out some warmth but it was not functional. Eventually a porter arrived with a small oil filled radiator and said he’d send an engineer to look at the AC unit. Well, long story short, another AC arrived but although working would not give any heat; the little freestanding electric radiator eventually managed to get the room reasonably warm by the time the heating also came on!! The radiator in the bathroom never worked at all beyond the lowest 2 - 3 inches.

One of our reasons for booking the State room was that it had a mini-bar and as my husband has to take a probiotic drink twice a day we thought it would be useful for keeping it cold. This also did not work so we used our car as a fridge …. good job it was cold weather!

Back to the food … as already stated we were not impressed by the food during our stay in January and sadly there was no improvement for our most recent stay. Everything tasted pre-cooked, breakfast was fine but we didn’t enjoy any other meal. The amuse-bouche offerings were very ordinary and rather large instead of small and intensely tasty morsels and apart from the delightful waiting staff dinner was not an event to be eagerly anticipated.

During both of the last two stays we were offered canapés (one savoury and one sweet) in our bedroom these arrived at about 6.00pm and we really couldn’t see the point of them at all but would rather the catering staff put more effort into dinner!

When leaving the hotel, nearly 4 weeks ago now, I left a completed hotel questionnaire at reception mentioning all the above points. I thought they would be helpful to management and expected a brief reply (name, address, telephone number and email all provided) to date I have received no communication from anyone!
