Terrible service for cancellation dealing

I cannot comment on rooms/location, and this review is strictly about my experience with the staff at Colonial Lodge Motel regarding cancellation of a booking.
I would give this motel a 0 star, but that's not an option.
I had a terrible experience with the owners of the Colonial Lodge, and would seriously advise any person not to use this motel (unless you have absolutely no options and would like to deal with some hateful persons). By way of background, I had a booking for three nights and had to cancel it for personal reasons at the last minute. I had paid for all three nights in advance approx $500 (through Booking.com), and before the cancellation was advised by Noel (who I believe owns the hotel) that this money could be refunded if replacement could be found for those three nights. After hearing this, I cancelled. Long story short, I found out that at 2 out of the 3 nights' replacements were found, so the motel made at least $300 from those sales. When I asked for this to be refunded, the owner flatly refused, told me to sue him if I want the money, and "try him". I ask that it is only fair that part of the money recovered should be refunded, as this is logical and sensible from the money the motel has made. Over three nights, they made $750 (this is my guess), when normally they would only make $450 or if I did not cancel the booking (and simply not have checked in). This is unreasonably profiteering and misleading of consumers. I tried to reason with the owner, but he was rude, abusive, shouted at me over the phone, told me to "try him" number of times, and said he will countersue me. I similarly lost it towards the end of the conversation because it was different to keep any civilised conversation., and had to hang up on him. I don't know whether I will pursue this, but the services could have been better and personally I now have a very distasteful opinion of Taupo motel owners as a result. This is a shame. My question is "what loss did the motel suffer as a result of my cancellation"? This is poorly and unacceptable. What a shame.

When trying to locate short notice accommodation in a tourist mecca like Taupo on a long weekend for a family of 5 we were concerned about what exactly we would find.
Those concerns were completely eliminated within a few minutes of arrival. The staff were great, the rooms were clean, comfortable and the location directly opposite the lakefront.

The motel was clean, quiet and in a good spot for a walk along the lakefront into town for breakfast - good value for money and would recommend! Friendly hosts and while it was busy it was still quiet.

We wanted a quiet weekend in Taupo to chill out after no holidays for a year.. our only stipulations were spa bath in the room, good wifi and nice and quiet.
Firstly the owners are fantastic. They have to be, they collect owls (.not live ones). They also care about their clients so the rooms are spotlessly clean. Theyre a good price too!
But oh boy, when we went to use the internet, super quick, super consistent. What more could you ask for. Well, they had everything set up for the cold winter Taupo nights, the spa batth was lovely, lots of tv channels and even a nice little kitchen if you want to cook meals. We are used to a bigger bed but quickly adapted to the big double and oh boy were those pillows comfortable ( extra points for that). Three nights of rest. We will definitely be back

Recently had a family trip to Hastings and stopped at this motel on the Fri night on the way down, and the Sat night on the way home.
The manager was very pleasant, the room was clean and a reasonable size and was really quiet given the proximity to the road.
Before we got back Sat night the beds had been made and the heater turned on which was very thoughtful.
Having said that the beds/pillows were not overly comfortable and we thought it was more a 3-3.5 Star than a 4...and thought $170 a night was just a little steep for what it was and the reason we rated it a 3/5 not slightly higher
