What People are saying
No charm whatsoever!

Comillas is a four-star hotel in a lovely old town, but I don't really understand how they rate hotels in Spain. Oh, yeah, it has a pool with green water (that will probably be changed by summer, but doesn't look good right now). Our room also had a marble bathroom, some wood paneling and a little fridge ("minibar"?), which contained 2 empty glasses and nothing else. In general, the place has as much charm as an old plastic bottle.
In fact, one can sense a grim determination not to elicit any warm and cosy feelings. As you enter a non-descript foyer, you are greeted by a businesslike receptionist (no complaints here, by the way - she was helpful and efficient), who explains to you that none of the better rooms with balconies are available and sends you to the end of a motel-like severe-looking corridor, where I was terrified to find myself in a tiny room (clean, but devoid of character) with a "view" of the windows across a bare yard. The attempt to open the window showed that windows should be kept closed, as you can hear cars, buses and trucks on a nearby road. That road is not a highway, but enjoys enough traffic to be a concern.
The receptionist was quite accommodating, when we asked for a different room, but the only difference was the view of the pool and the windows of another hotel some 25 meters away. The bathroom door did not want to stay closed and produced horror-movie squeaks. The room also had a stale-tobacco smell, which we sensed much later in the evening, when trying to fall asleep. That was not easy, as our neighbors were talking. Those were young, non-roudy athletes, but the hotel's sound insulation is not great - we could hear the athletes' every move.
The price of this joyless stay amounted to 71eu per night, breakfast not included. And having made reservations on the internet, we were stuck: you can cancel only ahead of time. And that was a pity, because during our walk the next day we came across a lovely casa rural with views of the sea for half the price.
On the whole, Comillas is an ok place to stay, if you come for one night on your way somewhere else, but if you want to enjoy some charm, go elsewhere!
Could be excellent, but...

The hotel has the potential to be excellent, but they need to fix a few things first. The good news - convenient location (provided you avoid the traffic lights in the center of Comillas), comfortable bed, clean room, old fashioned style (dark wood, lovely old table in the room, comfortable old fashioned chairs, etc.), friendly staff, on-site parking, seating outside. Unfortunately it's hardly possible to regulate the flow of water from the tap, it's either fully on or off; the shower head doesn't stay in place properly so the water sprays in the wrong direction; the plastic key to activate the electricity in the room is erratic; the bathroom door is difficult to close; breakfast is ok but not great; room safe not included in the price. My advice to the owners: fix the problems just mentioned and you should consistently get 4 or 5 star reviews with no trouble. And please move the breakfast room to the ground floor if possible. Another problem we had was the noise from the people upstairs on the last night of our 3 day stay -Â for some reason they decided to move lots of furniture just before midnight. Hopefully this was a one off and just bad luck. Note: some of the older reviews here seem to refer to a different hotel, Hotel Comillas is definitely not on the beach and doesn't have underground parking!
Not worth the 4 stars

The location of the hotel is very good, the towns attractions are in walking distance and so is the beach (15min walk). However the shower was very inconveniently set up so there's no way to shower without getting water on the floor of the bathroom. The bidet is right in front of the toilet which is inconvenient and the sink was broken.
The breakfast was a disappointment. We've had a lot better in 4 star hotels!!
However the antique furnishing gives the hotel a very nice touch.
Another thing is that you have to pay 3⬠for the safe which I think is disgusting since the usage of a safe in the hotel should be included!
Great hotel / free parking

It was our second stay at this great hotel. We loved it again since all amenities were what we expected for the price. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Breakfast was just ok but complimentary so no complaints. We'll come back!
Very strict with penalties

Owing to a mix up in our booking we arrived at a different hotel and stayed there by mistake. It was a very simple and easy mistake but they insisted on charging us the full amount and were not prepared to discuss the matter. Be very careful: if you search for Hotel, Comillas (i.e. a hotel in Comillas) you get Hotel Comillas and they are very strict.
