The bad: foul smell of sewage in the bathroom, noise from the restaurant in the morning, no dedicated parking, average quality bar, bunk beds of low quality.
The good: location, cleanliness, view from the room.

We had a room with a great view, the garden is beautiful, but the equipment and the cleanliness of the room is poor. We had a small kitchen without any equipment (so it was useless) and the floor of the room has never been cleaned within nine days. The breakfast was boring, everyday the same and not very good.

Hotel well located. Plenty of parking spaces. Restaurants and shops around. Rooms clean, cleaned daily. Terrace, fridge and kitchen in room. Breakfasts are the same every day, but a good selection of dishes. I would recommend the hotel as a nice vacation spot in Madeira.

Very good service and clean hotel. The room was cleaned daily and bed made up daily as well. However little bugs were living in our trash bin...
Breakfast was quite good (omlette, sausages, bean sauce, a lot of pies and breads, ber poor vegetables (seemed to be plastic ones - without a real taste)).
The first night we woke up because of the noise. It was the grass watering.
Other irritating thing was loud and smokers neighbours...
The rest was really good.

The hotel is quite honestly a bit dated and in need of sprucing up, however overall we enjoyed our stay in the Dom Pedro.
On the negative side we felt that the room was rather dark, even in daytime with the lights on and there was a 'drainy', smell noticeable as soon as you entered the room. We had breakfast each day which was OK but nothing special. It also seemed extremely odd that the only place to access wifi was in the hotel reception area. Surely in 2017 wifi should be available throughout the hotel.
On the more positive side we had a lovely view from our room looking over the rooftops to the sea and enjoyed sitting on the balcony reading or eating. We also enjoyed the pool and the gardens. It is also very useful that the bus into Funchal goes from right opposite the hotel and we used this quite a lot.
The staff seemed very friendly on the whole but we felt rather sorry for Paulina who was put in a difficult position by the management in that she had to ask people to pay for their stay when Monarch collapsed! Not the hotels fault but perhaps could have been handled better.
