Traditional pub with Christmas Menu

It's been a couple of years since we were last at the Engine Inn, but not a lot has changed in that time. The pub is very traditional inside and out, with a selection or cask ales, different areas to sit, drink and eat, and a welcoming real fire roaring away.
The Christmas menu was still on offer for our visit, with a choice of two or three courses for a reasonable price.
A few of our group opted for starter and main, with others going for main and pudding.
Starters ordered included the pheasant meatballs and scallops, which were all enjoyed.
Despite the Christmas theme the three bird roast did not include turkey, but a variety of game including pheasant, partridge and pigeon, served with roast potatoes, parsnips, sprouts and bacon, cranberry sauce, gravy and herby creamy sauce. All very tasty and rich as you would expect from game, but the bird roast was still a little dry despite the sauces and gravy. Veg was excellent and plentiful though.
Others in our group had more traditional pub fair including steak and ale pie, fish and chips and children's choice of chicken nuggets and chips. Again all enjoyed by our group and very substantial portions, but for those wanting chips with their pie these had to be ordered as a side as sprouts and bacon, and parsnips were the accompaniments.
All portion sizes were so generous that, none of our group could manage a pudding, so guess we will wait till next time to review this course. Hopefully will be less than a couple of years till next time though.

Had a wonderful meal here this evening. Service was excellent and very friendly staff. The owner Jonathan - his knowledge of wine is clear to see on the wine list. Decor done to a very high standard. Nothing too much trouble. Well worth a visit.
Witness to a bad attitude!

Myself & my partner were in the pub for a drink one night recently when a group of 3 young men came in, probably in their early 20's? They asked if the pub was serving food to which the Landlord said "No, sorry, we've stopped serving now". The lads didn't seem too disappointed, they bought a drink and stood at the bar drinking it. Next thing a family came in and asked the same question to which the landlord then responded with "Yes, we're still serving, take some menu's and find a seat and i'll come and take your order" I thought why on earth would he turn the lads down but blatantly serve the family right under their noses? The lads obviously thought the same and one of them said "Is our money not good enough for you?" The landlord replied "Well I thought you'd just want a portion of chips or something whereas the family are ordering full meals" The lads said "if you'd asked us you would have found we also wanted full meals". They promptly finished their drinks and left, and i don't blame them. Double standards aren't good in the hospitality trade. I would also hazard a guess that these lads would be local, someone needs to remind the landlord that Winters are long and quiet and locals will be his bread & butter. Not impressed!

This used to be our regular pub for drinks when stopping at our holiday cottage. New owner and he doesn't seem to be coping.Really badly poured ale,too much air.Only 2 cask ales and this pub used to be backed by CAMRA. Used to sell very popular Rosie Pig cider but not now. His dog is all over the pub, eating beer mats and once seen having a wee. We were the only customers and bar staff sent home, music turned off so we certainly didnt feel welcome. Not one to give up, we will try again but please cheer up Jonathan, its meant to be enjoyable.

We stayed at the Engine Inn for August Cartmel race meeting ..I can honestly say our party of 4 had a great stay ..like other reviews state yes the rooms are basic but clean and tidy ... if you want spa luxury, Hilton luxury , then book a stay at a Hilton spa .we was looking for a cosy, freindly ,country pub type stay and that was what we got ..this is a lovely country bed and breakfast with the feelings of real country decor ..log fires.. oak beams etc .....most importantly for us was how lovely the food was and how friendly the staff were .. our party almost went through the menu over our 4 night stay trying different dishes and not one bad meal from scampi to steak the Chef never dissapointed us. The breakfast was unreal! All fresh local produce ....Darren the Manager was superb, nothing was a problem for him...Jonathon the new owner was a true Gent too (thank you for the short cut to racecourse tip ) ..all in all the team at the Engine were fantastic, nothing being too much trouble... As was the setting ..Train station just across the road with trains running to Grange-Over Sands and Ulverston. A little bus running straight to the racecourse on racedays, £3 return it was fab.....Race meeting or not I will be defainatly returning to the Engine Inn .I must apologise I forgot the Barmans name but that is partly his fault for serving me some fine ales .hic hic lol......thanks guys hopefully see you soon ....Jeff (manchester)
