Boxing Day Disaster - Total Rip Off

IndiaSavvy on 19/01/2018 13:24

We booked a Boxing Day lunch through Groupon here and it was our only planned 'Christmas Meal' and we were both really looking forward to it. I have to admit I thought I had booked the Himley House but wasn't too disheartened as I had not been here before so thought I would give it a go. What a total disaster. When we first arrived we had to walk through a bucket of cigarette ends all over the floor at the hotel entrance and park the car in the pot holed car park next to a large skip overflowing with trash. I didn't want to go in, to be honest, bearing in mind I had dressed for the occasion and felt over-dressed at the state of the place I was going to eat at. We asked at the bar where we had to go as there was no one at the reception when we entered (a member of staff had written 'please ask at the bar for help' on a piece of A4 paper and left in on the reception desk) and the bar staff pointed over to a large room with a 1960's sign above the door sayiing 'restaurant'. We were shown to our table and sat down and imediately noticed the dirty stained white tablecloth along with the matching cutlery covered in congealed food plus the missing Christmas crackers. Then we were handed a sheet of A4 paper with very limited choices. Three starters, two mains and three deserts to choose from. My heart sank as this is NOT what we had paid for as we had seen the menu prior to this and booked the meal acccording to what was on the menu through Groupon. The starters were home made tomato soup, some soft of pate or melon. The mains was a carvery or fish. Deserts were an individual frozen small strawberry cheesecake (Tesco or Asda), home made bread pudding or fruit. We both had the tomoato soup starters which was just 'ok' but nothing special. It''s not really rocket science to make tomato soup. It was also served with a tiny bread bap, one of those part cooked ones you get from Aldi in a pack of 15 for a pound. The food on the carvery itself, especially both sorts of potato were undercooked along with the two choices of vegetables. Talk about being really miserable. There were no pigs in blankets, sprouts, parsnips, cabbage, peas etc. Bear in mind this was NOT Sunday lunch, ti was BOXING DAY. We both left most of our mains as the meat with covered with fat and the second mouthful for me was gristly. The bread pudding was disgusting. It was made with brown bread and was burnt all around the edges. They had put some custard with it and microwaved it as it had hot spots on the bowl. Even my partner left his and he will eat almost anything, but this was terrible. We never had a check back and we were never offered anything else to compensate. Our plates were just cleared. The whole 'meal' took around 30 minutes. I could not wait to leave. Everytime i looked around the room everyone was playing with their food with their forks and food was being sent back and we could not but notice how filthy every window was. when I was asked if I would like coffe I said, "Yes please, I had better have something to ea todayt," again the member of staff just turned about heel and walked off to return with a filthy coffee pot containg very weak coffee. They coulnd't even get that right. This place is just out to rob people and we paid a lot of money for this meal. Once they have had your money, that's it. I contacted Groupon as soon as I got home as I was so upset and they have refunded my money. It's lovely having a refund, but my Boxing Day has now been and gone. They are going to look into this company and while they do I shall be contacting the Himley Country Hotel's Head Office. They are a disgrace and if Trading Standards and Food Standards Agency knew about this place they would have a field day. Please stay away, you have been warned!!! Unfortunaely I cannot give a zero.

Just Awful 🤮😂

Our daughter booked a surprise high tea for her Grandmas birthday 🎁 . We arrived in good time and were completely ignored by the staff. After 10 minutes we managed to catch the attention of one of the very few staff they had. We had to remind the staff that we had pre-booked a gluten free high tea as well as the four none gluten high teas. On being seated at our table in the conservatory we were immediately greeted to a dirty/stained table cloth with strategically placed plates to cover the stain. When the young lady served the one pot of tea (5 people) which only served two and a half cups she didn’t seem too impressed when we asked for another pot so that we could all have a cup of tea ☕️. After a few minutes the young lady returned with an even smaller teapot of tea and I can only say the most awful smell appeared to follow her around, which we later realised was the most pungent body odour that eventually overpowered both the conservatory and the bar area. When the four normal high teas were presented they looked okay, but not impressive with a selection of white and brown bread finger sandwiches, two selections of cake 🍰 and a fruit scone with cream and jam. The bits of side salad 🥗 were dry with a white film on the tomato slices and an added bonus of a strand of someone’s hair 🤮. The gluten free high tea was an absolute joke . White bread only (which I don’t eat) and two finger box cake slices cherry and almond Bakewell (Sainsbury’s) and an extremely hard chocolate brownie again with a touch of dried out salad again with a white coating over the tomato 🍅, no scone, cream or jam..... the whole thing looked and tasted dismal. When my daughter asked if they could swop the white bread for brown, the pungent waitress fetched another member of staff to inform me that they only had white bread 🥖 and there were no alternative options available to me 😃. Whilst sitting laughing and trying to salvage a very disappointing birthday treat we witnessed the pungent waitress wipe the tea saucers with her cardigan... REALLY! Well as you can imagine we didn’t stay too long and you certainly couldn’t sit in the bar area for a drink because the body odour was so strong it hit the back of you throat.🤮 The building itself is extremely tired and requires some serious maintenance and could someone please try the stair slopes out for the disabled they are completely inappropriate and extremely dangerous. Would I return .... No. Do they staff need appropriate training ... Yes. Thank you Himley Country Hotel for one of the worse but both entertaining experiences that we will talk about in years to come. Just as a foot note I really didn’t think it was worth one star but there was no option available for minus stars.

Afternoon tea

garfeild on 13/01/2018 20:21

We go for afternoon tea quite often so when I say that this was a poor afternoon tea it is with experience. The hotel entrance and public areas need a revamp the carpet is frayed on the way in. The ramp feels bouncy which if you have poor balance is a hazard. Service was poor with only one waiter for a room full of people some of whom were obviously celebrating special occasions. I would have been so dissapointed. Choice of cakes poor scone dried out and crumbling. Unless it's changed it really needs to improve its standards

Disgusting Hotel

dicktrivia on 11/01/2018 16:49

Very poor hotel. Our first room was uninhabitable. The bed was not made and the bin was full of rubbish. We asked to be moved and were given another room. This room had a filthy toilet seat, disgusting shower(dirty grout, damaged tiles) dirty toilet roll, damp in the room, wallpaper peeling off the walls and damaged furniture/mirror. Not pleasant. Breakfast was ok, buffet style, but the whole place looked dirty and unkempt. Will not be coming back.

Steak cooked to perfection

ladydihall on 08/01/2018 16:41

My husband and I visited for a steak meal for the first time and wow were we impressed. The service was excellent and all staff were welcoming. We both had steak meals and i can honestly say I have never had such a succulent, tastly steak, cooked to perfection. The food was hot and just enough i.e. not overwhelmed with chips like most places. My husband had a soup starter and i had a white cheesecake dessert with cream. Both of these were also extremely tasty. I might add, the drinks were reasonably priced as well which is always a bonus. This was a groupon deal so a winner all round from us. We have already purchased another one to visit again soon.
