Never again, we felt cheated by the owner

We will surely not go again in this hotel. Here are the main reasons, overall we felt cheated by the answers provided by the owner: (1) the owner Bart who is rarely at the reception is basically never reachable by phone. He does not seem to care about this as he owns 3 hotels. (2) we asked him via e-mail (as he does not pick up the phone) what was the address of the public parking. The owner only bothered to give us the address of the hotel. So we thought the big public parking was next to the hotel. The so called free public parking is basically in the street. Good luck to find a parking during high season! We could hear other clients complaining about the same thing as they probably also only received a wishy washy answer from the owner (3) we asked via e-mail whether we could ask special requirements for our baby to the chef of the restaurant. The owner did not bother to tell us there is actually no restaurant in the hotel. He only answered it is 2 min walk letting us believe there is a restaurant in the hotel. (4) he showed us the so called bar of the hotel... well basically you can help yourself in the fridge of the breakfast room and write down on a piece of paper the drinks you take (5) basically the WIFI could not be used as the reception was so bad (6) we asked via e-mail whether there were balconies, the owner answered yes but in fact there was none for our suite (7) the rooms seem renewed but in fact the general atmosphere is cold and without any soul (8) there is no real reception, the owner is a bit there in the morning sometimes but in fact this hotel seems more a bed & breakfast. (9) There is no real entrance hall and the lift has obviously not been renewed nor compliant with some security norms. Mind that the lift is very tiny and a pram does not fit in. (10) The owner is not particularly friendly and does not greet when you meet him in this tiny entrance of the hotel. (11) Otherwise the location and the breakfast are good (12) for a 3 stars hotel it is better to take the hotel Astoria next to it. Hotel Astoria is very charming and there is a restaurant there at least.
Excellent value for money

Our room was very tidy, bed comfortable and room was big. Very quiet, too.
Easy to find free parking within 200 m from the hotel.
Breakfast ok, nothing special really, but I guess you get what you pay for.
WIFI worked without any problems.
I would definitely go back in case I returned to De Hann.
Good location - Nice family room

All in all a good place to go. Missed the coffee & tea facilities in the room. Breakfast is just ok. Host friendly & helpful. I would say it is maybe slightly overpriced.
Bed were too soft & had pits - so quality poor or old. The location is fabulous!
Nice hotel

Initially we booked this hotel for three nights (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), but my wife had to go on a business trip on Monday to the Netherlands so we wanted to cancel the last night. I contacted the manager of the hotel by phone and email and he was so generous to cancel the last night without a cancellation fee.
The hotel is typical for the early 20th century "Concession" resort of De Haan. Despite its age and due to recent renovation the rooms and bathrooms are very comfortable and bright. The elevator is not for people with claustrophobia though.
It's located between the more commercial and modern Kerkstraat and the shore.
Continental breakfast with a lot of choice but served rather late: from 8:30 AM on, but most of the hotels in De Haan serve breakfast at that time. I guess we're spoiled by staying in business hotels most of the time.
Free and very fast WIFI. Bring you own coffe facilities (like we did) if you're an early bird (see late breakfast).
Top location to explore Belgium

A really comfortable room with free Internet access and flatscreen tv. No tea and coffee making facilities available, however if you know this a travel kettle does the trick. A very welcoming host who provided a fabulous continental choice at breakfast.
The hotel is 5 minutes walk to a glorious sandy beach that stretches to Ostende one way and Zebrugge the other.
Also 2 minutes walk to the Coast tram which you can use to get to Ostende from where you can catch the train to Brugge, Gent, Antwerp or Brussells. 6 Euro's buys a day pass for the tram which covers as many journeys as you like in a day. Train to Brugge from Ostende is 8 euros for a return.
De Haan is also 10 mins drive to the main E4.
We travelled out of season and so not many pubs/bars were open in De Haan in the evening.
