A good base for exploring

Rooms small and basic, with a private shower room. Breakfast was ok, nothing amazing, but juices and fruit were good. A digital safe was provided without charge for keeping valuables safe. Staff speak limited English, therefore if problems arise be prepared to use google translate if you don't speak Portuguese. Staff tried hard to please despite the language barrier. Our hair drier did not work. The staff offered to move us to another room to rectify this but we decided to manage without. The area of lapa itself is grubby and grey looking. A huge level of poverty very apparent in the immediate vicinity. Numerous homeless people sleeping rough around the streets. None gave us any cause for concern, although I probably wouldn't have ventured too far from the hotel in the evening alone. There is a huge supermarket just across the road, as well as many other small shops. The area is great for clubs and bars. There are many to choose from. Some expect passport details before granting entry. Within the hotel we felt very safe. The hotel also allowed us to check out late, as we weren't flying home until the evening. If you are looking for a high end tourist hotel this would not be the place for you. However, if like us you wanted to experience 'real brazil' this would be a good option. Taxis are always available to hail on the street. It never took us more than a minute to find one and prices were reasonable (necessary if you are wanting to visit copacobana and other attractions). Buses were also frequent from outside the hotel, but we did not use them.
Solid choice

I stayed here for three weeks while working on the Paralympics.
The hotel is on a busy but not very touristy street in Lapa, convenient for Santa Teresa and Lapa's bars and restaurants although the immediate surroundings are more local than touristy. That said, it never felt unsafe. It's about 20 minutes' walk to Cinelandia/Carioca/Central metro/train stations, so not especially close. Buses down Rua Richuelo are constant and frequent to lots of places.
My room was comfortable enough with good, quiet air conditioning and a good bathroom. Breakfast was good, standard Brazilian choices. I didn't try the restaurant or room service or use the pool, but did use the gym - couple of treadmills, one normal bike, one recumbent bike, one cross trainer, all in decent condition but not new. Couldn't work out how to use the air con in the gym. Wifi was good.
Staff were friendly enough but most didn't go out of their way to be especially helpful. A low point was the day I needed an early breakfast and discovered the waiter hadn't turned up so there was none. My cleaner, however, kindly brought me extra hangers without being asked to hang clothes I'd washed up to dry on.
Very Good Hotel

I stayed there for 5 days. Form outside it looks a lithe bit old, but inside its completely renewed. my room was big, the bed was comfortable. it has a big TV on it. the bathroom was very very good. Big. the wifi was a little bit slow. but im not going to Rio to use Wifi. so for the kind of traveler i am is not a big deal. I really can't complain about this hotel. i would go back many times.
The location is not the best in Rio if you want peace and tranquility, but is very good to access many others. In front of the hotel you can get a bus for almost anywhere in the city. Plus theres a supermarket right across the street.
The personal on the hotel was also kind . my native language is spanish and there wa son one speaking it, and i don't speak portuguese. their english was ok.
Nice place to stay in Lapa District.

If you are looking for a quiet place then this is not the hotel. It is in the heart of Lapa District...which is noisy and beautiful 24/7. All basic needs like grocery and ATMs are right in the corner. Excellent breakfast although rooms can be a bit cleaner. Good staff and safe environment.

I stay here for 3 nights. Overall experience was plesant. staff is friendly but bed not too clean. for some more money you can stay at more clean place but i felt safe. nice people and nice building a bit old but still good shape. i come back to Rio in 6 months so maybe try another place.
