What People are saying

80s hotel, food first

leonovemail on 19/03/2015 01:26

This hotel is briliant place if you want wind back to 80s. Position of hotel is nice, walk to town center 10 mins just enought to clear minds.
Rooms are spacy with south orientation w balcony. Bathroom was esential and functional. Beds were single joined together but very good sleep on madrace.
So rooms was from 80s, small tv is telling you "go out" :)
Restaurant: First of all drinks are a little bit on high price side but ok it's not a pub.
Food: Here is a trick, you will be offered a menu with list of food. Ok have to addmit I didn't tried much of it, instead I was asking whatever was on daly menu. Since than every single plate I had in 7 days there was brilliant. I believe this Michellin star was deserved with reason.
Interior of restorant is warm with interesting styling crossections, in general very charming.
After all had hotel impression as a nice family hotel with hidden soul in 80s.

The restaurant has a Michelin star... But the hotel?

Luke M on 28/12/2013 21:31

When my partner told me the restaurant of this hotel had a Michelin star, I admit I had fairly high expectations. And even in this day and age, I think that €119 a night should buy a fairly high standard of accommodation in a remote town in the far north east of Holland. In fairness, the restaurant and reception have a warm, comfortable feel and the staff were very friendly and helpful. But the hotel is dated and a bit tacky. Moreover, there were a number of small, easy to fix/avoid problems that cost next to nothing to rectify and could change the whole experience.

Let's start with the good:
1. The location is good and there is little else in Hardenberg within walking distance to the centre.
2. The breakfast, although very basic (and with no hot food options and limited choices) was fresh and what was there was of a good quality.
3. The beds (no king/queen but two singles which we pushed together) were comfortable and had reasonably good linen and covers.
4. The rooms are a good size and there is a small terrace area for each room. Although offering an uninspiring view of the car park and back of the restaurant, it was an OK place to be able to sit outside in a certain degree of privacy.

Unfortunately, the bad list is a lot longer:
1. There were no hangers in the wardrobe (see pic). Seems a bit stupid to have a hanging space with no hangers?
2. There was no fridge or tea and coffee facilities in the room. I don't know about you, but if I was booking a hotel and restaurant package at a place boasting a star restaurant, I guess I would expect something as simple as to be able to make myself a cup of coffee or have some chilled water in my room!
3. There were cobwebs in the bathroom. And the plug for the basin was broken (years ago by the looks of it, see pic) and had been wedged into the overflow outlet. I mean, I could live with 30 year old tapware but to replace a plug and chain costs less than €5, and to brush away cobwebs costs nothing...
4. OK, I admit I rarely watch TV when I stay at a hotel. But seriously, a 34cm CRT TV with build in aerial in 2013? In an era when a 42 cm flat screen LED can be bought for less than €300, this is just insulting.
5. The main lamp in the room did not work. OK, this is a trivial thing that did not cause great stress, but surely it should be part of the daily housekeeping schedule to check the lights in each room and change any broken bulbs?
6. The decor is terribly dated. Apart form the curtains that screech every time you move them and the cane furniture that would have been outmoded in the 90's, the arrangement just does not work. The foot switch for the dead lamp was hanging in the air because the power point was too far away. Likewise the right hand bed side lamp. On the left side of the bed, there was a clock radio on the table. Great, except if you wanted to charge a mobile while sleeping, because then you had to make a choice: clock or phone?
7. The footbin in the bathroom was broken. Again, not a deal breaker, but the same model was selling for under €6 at the local "Xenos". Really, would it be so hard to fix?

Overall, this was a very disappointing hotel. The owners could make a killing if they invested in a makeover to make the hotel match the restaurant. There is no real competition for miles and they could easily sell high end packages for gourmet getaways. Even if their vision doesn't go that far, for less than €20 they could make the place functional if not beautiful. For the same money you can stay at a 4-5 star hotel in most parts of Europe. Hardenberg deserves better than this...

Lousy service

Dirk M on 17/09/2012 09:49

Hotel in general OK with somewhat old fashioned rooms. Good breakfast.
Service however poor.....Forgot a nice shirt in the wardrobe of my room. Send them the same evening an E-mail to ask for seperate shipment of the shirt by courier service (For which they could charge the shipping cost to my credit card). Never received any answer from them and obviously the shirt will never come back
