Excellent again second time around

This was our second time at this hotel, each time in January. Their high standards hadn't slipped, some of the staff even recognising us from our previous visit. Although this is a large hotel we are always made to feel very welcome, individual and looked after, thanks to staff like Miguel at the front desk and Hugo our evening waiter. Miguel is fantastic at answering our pre-visit enquiries and requests - replying by return and ensuring that any special requests are carried out prior to our arrival. Hugo is a world-class waiter who is incredibly efficient - he knows when your glass is almost empty before you do - and very pleasant to everyone. Although these are the two members of staff that we had most contact with, I'm sure most staff here will be similar. Whoever buys the fresh fruit (sadly we didn't meet him/her) deserves a medal. It is always at peak ripeness and full of flavour.
It's true that the hotel is not new, but it's extremely clean and well serviced in all areas. The bedrooms are spacious and well equipped and a nice touch is the clean white linen tablecloths, changed between every guest at every meal. It's also true that the clientele is not young either, but the advantage of this is that the atmosphere is quiet and calm. There were a small number of children when we were there: they were welcomed and appreciated by all the staff, but we did notice that this wasn't the reaction of a lot of the guests. There are so many sunbeds around the pools that it's never a problem to find one in either sun or shade and one of the outdoor pools being heated makes swimming even in January a very pleasant experience.
Food was good with a great deal of choice and the cava that we drank with most of our meals was certainly of a more than decent quality. The coffee machine at breakfast provided us with a good choice of coffee of a standard far above most hotel coffee and the drinks from the bar were great. The little cafe by the swimming pool does a good service in drinks (again good coffee) with snacks and fruit should you ever manage to be hungry between meals.
The only thing we didn't enjoy much was the evening entertainment but we were certainly in the minority considering the applause that followed each act. It just wasn't our taste. We appreciated the shuttle bus to Funchal and back and the flexibility of being able to choose our times.
We hired a car for the whole period that we were there. The scenery of Madeira is outstanding and this being our second visit we were able to find pretty villages that are off the beaten track, go levada walking and discover new parts of the stunning coastline. The roads, though steep in some places are good and driving isn't at all difficult. We were lucky enough to visit a small seaside village called Jardim do Mar on the south coast when the waves were enormous and a few very brave people were surfing. We'd never seen waves this high in Europe before and it was pretty exciting.
So all in all, a very good holiday again. I don't feel Riu Palace can be faulted, value for money and the more I see of Madeira the more I like it and its people.
Awesome hotel/brilliant staff

I've discovered Riu Palace in 2015 and I've been coming here ever since. The hotel facility is first class: waterfront location, elegantly decorated building, three swimming pools and what not. The staff is almost the same throughout these years, I felt that people working here are proud of their job, they provide fantastic service. Special mention this time is to the room allocation unit: they are so skillful and hospitable, they managed to give me my "favorite room" (the one I felt in love at first sight on my first visit here). Thank you and I hope we'll meet again next year.
Revists

Large proportion of gusts are revisits - speaks for itself and that is all nationalities. Staff all speak 2 languages at least. Even cleaning staff attempt to understand your language and are charming. The staff make the hotel what it is. a friendly relaxing place to stay.
Good 4 star hotel

Excellent views from our room on the top floor. Rooms are spacious with plenty of space for clothes. Bathroom was spacious, shower and bath were very welcome with good selection of toiletries. Room service was very good. We requested that our room be cleaned early and it done before lunch time. There is just one main restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is also pool cafe. There is great variety of food and they are all buffet service. Only criticism will be that at evening time bar and waiter service is fairly stretched and you could wait a while to be served. Occasionally, it was easier to go to the bar and get your drinks. Outside the hotel, there is good walkway along the shore. There are no shop outlet around the hotel, but there is courtesy bus each day to Funchal, but you have to book a day ahead. Good break for one week. May get monotonous after a week.
Fantastic Hotel

This is our 6th visit to this hotel last time being in October 2017.....and we have booked again for this next Oct 2018.
Booked this time last minute deal for 10 nights. The staff and service still great. The food and drinks re AI still good value. The pool was heated.
If you want a lovely experience without too much formality then this is the place for you. Its suitable for the more discerning couple being quite but friendly. The staff know and take an interest in you.
The wifi is excellent and free throughout the hotel and easily supports Amazon Fire Stick as only negative is the tv service doesn't cater much for English speaking channels.
Please RIU keep things as they are.
