We were staying there in March 2016 and fell in love in the island and that place.
Hotel is old - you can see that - but amazingly located, having all facilities you need to relax and forget about the world.
We chose the room with the ocean view - and we highly recommend it although it was over the restaurant so we could hear the evening sounds.
Breakfast and dinner offer were good - rich and tasty.
Hotel offers free buses to Funchal - great option for saving money and visiting the capital.
Staff was friendly.
We would choose this hotel again probably.

Excellent hotel, with well-equipped room for self-catering and good gym, swimming pools and public areas. Lovely location but very steep hills. Good parking facilities for hire cars. Very helpful staff

In desperate need of upgrade, stained furniture,peeling paint work, very noisy in the morning, be careful of entering bar areas out with scheduled times staff will pounce , breakfast was awful,managed twice in 2 weeks a sopping mess

We visited Madeira for a week to go walking. We stayed in a studio with a sea view and balcony, room 108. The room was clean, supplied towels and loo rolls whenever needed. Take your own tea, coffee etc to save having to buy this from the local Spar shop (we found the guy in there quite rude so just went in there just once and managed to shop elsewhere where the staff were more welcoming and helpful)
The reception staff were a bit hit and miss, the male staff seemed pretty disinterested and just answered basic questions in quite a rushed manner. The female receptionist were excellent, friendly, helpful and two in particular went beyond our expectations to find a return bus for us on a fiesta day.
The gym is very good with free weights plus all the machines you would need, help was there from the staff if required.
We ate at a few of the local restaurants within walking distance of the hotel - Snack Bare Mare, the owner is Russian, very friendly and helpful - excellent octopus and prices were really good, we'd thoroughly recommend. The other place we loved was A Traineira, again excellent octopus and fish, great staff, a little more expensive than the snack bar - again would recommend.

The Room, a 2 bed Studio was quite large and very clean with daily maid service.
It was however a bit tired and was in need of decorating and the fittings updating. A couple of issues we had on taking over the room quite late in the day were reported and dealt with efficiently early next morning.
The view from the balcony was quite amazing.
The staff were always very polite and helpful with the single exception of an incident in the bar/restaurant by reception in the Royal Orchid. The hotel was part of a complex of three hotels and we could access the "Roca Mar" next door through a third floor corridor.
The buffets served in the main restaurant were excellent both for breakfast and dinner and were reasonably priced white the Rocky bar served a good choice of snacks and light meals on a terrace overlooking the ocean throughout the afternoon.There were lots of steps to be negotiated to get around the hotels and to the numerous pools and terraces and the locality is very hilly. The resort therefore is not really suitable for people with walking difficulties. I would go back again.
