A hidden gem. Paul B on 31 Reviews

The Adil Shahi dynasty ruling from Bijapur has made many contributions to the historically rich Deccan region. Among the many awe-inspiring monuments left behind by them, the Gol Gumbaz arguably ranks first. Dominating the landscape, it looms large over the mosques, palaces, watch-towers and fortifications that give Bijapur its unique character.

Karnataka Hotels Bijapur is located a short distance from the Gol Gumbaz and provides an excellent view of the monument. The small, cozy hotel has 4 double bed rooms and a restaurant to cater to its guests.

    What People are saying

    A hidden gem.

    Paul B on 16/01/2018 11:14

The San Antonio Abad (El Silencio) church is a bit hidden in the narrow Alphonso XII Street, just South of the El Cortes Ingles department store at the del Duque Square and is visited mostly by locals.
A must see when you are in the neighbourhood.
The current church was built in the first half of the 18th century and included / joined the former hospital church of San Antonio Abad and the chapel of the Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús del Silencio.
The rectangular interior courtyard of the church has different religious motifs and images on its side walls.
Inside the temple, you can see the amazing altarpieces.
    Entrance is free.

    Lovely and Ornate

    Stephanie S on 11/01/2018 04:06

This is a local church and very beautiful with a much revered image in the courtyard. In November there was a special devotion on and it was very crowded. The lovely church is free and non touristy. The one drawback is it is hard to get the opening times-they do not relate to anything in a guidebook-just chance. The good-it is very beautiful and only a 100m or so from El Corte Ingles down Calle Alfonse so not out of the way.

    Interesting church

Church of San Antonio Abad contains a revered Nazarene image of the 16th century which is situated outside the entrance in the small courtyard. It is very well attended with numerous offerings and most worshipers don't enter the church. Inside is the usual heavily ornate Baroque with an attractive side chapel to the Virgin. The triple bell is a standout feature.

    Busy

This is a busy church visited by mainly locals. There was queues of people trying to get in when we visited. The interior is very grand and pretty. Free.

    Very interesting!

Very interesting church, felt different. Small, silent, dark, with figures inside which I could not name. Worth a visit to check it out. However, it is more of a real church than a tourist atraction.
