What People are saying

Great location, exceptional staff

GalwayGirl9 on 10/02/2018 15:23

Apologies that I have not written this review sooner. - I actually travelled in June 2016.

I arrived on a Sunday evening. My GPS had a difficult time finding it, but in reality it should not have. It is dead easy (bring back old fashioned maps). I got on street parking which was free until 8 the next morning. I was greeted by the friendly and professional Catherine. I asked if I could have a room away from the lift and she immediately upgraded my room as it was a Sunday and they were not busy. I had two recommendations for restaurants from friends and she said both were excellent. Check in was easy and quick.

By the time I had got to my room (down the hallway behind reception), Catherine was ringing me to tell me that she had rung the two restaurants but unfortunately they had no tables available. I had not asked her to do this, she had so helpfully done it on her own. She expressed surprise and regret that she was not able to get me a spot. When I had unpacked, I went back through reception to thank her and she gave me other options for dinner. First class service the perfect blend of genuineness, friendliness, warmth and professional assistance.

The room was dark, as others have said, but I was only there to sleep so it was perfect. The bathroom had me laughing out loud with all the tongue in cheek messages on the toiletries but I won't ruin it for you. Bed was comfortable and the hotel quiet (but it was a Sunday night).

Only slightly negative was the less friendly barman. On a quiet night, he did not seem to want to engage in any conversation which was less than ideal, but his attitude was FAR outweighed by Catherine in reception.

I'd stay again for sure.

Date night package

Martin B on 06/02/2018 13:16

My girlfriend arranged a date night package as a late birthday celebration for myself. We stayed for 1 night sunday 4/2/18. Room 117.

Upon arrival at around 4pm there was a level of uncertainty on whether our room was ready, the receptionist told us "we have had quite a few earlier check ins so will just have to check with housekeeping to see what's available". This to me seemed rather unprofessional and should really be a conversation we either shouldn't hear or have taken place before 3pm to ensure our room was available. Also potentially this may have been a coincidence but our room felt like the furthest away room in the hotel and as it was on a corner seemed a bit small. We got settled in are room and we started getting ready for our meal at 530 in the hotel restaurant. While getting ready we expected a knock on the door with a delivery of our bottle of champagne which was part of the package. Unfortunately this never happened and by the point we made that assumption it was too close to our meal time so wouldn't have time to enjoy it.

We then went down for dinner at 530, we were greeted by a large team of waiting staff who were very helpful. We had the winter menu as part of the package, the food was lovely and both were left defeated half way through pudding. We also got our complimentary bottle of fizz along with our meal after missing out in our room.

Unfortunately there was a few disappointing aspects of our meal. I had the soup and the waiting staff offered me tomato balsamic 1st, then 2 minutes after apologised because that was wrong and it's actually curried lentil. I had no problem with this and accepted the switch. Then to my surprise the same waitress returned to tell me it was actually tomato and cream cheese. At this point I found it strange how staff were so unsure/unaware on what soup of the day was. Anyway I stuck with the soup and rach had the salmon. Both dishes then arrived and my soup was visibly roasting hot. Rach was finished her starter before I had even had a spoonful of soup, I did mention to the staff it was roasting hot to which they offered more bread but tbh that wasn't exactly going to cool the soup down. I eventually after a good 10 minutes after receiving was able to have the soup and it was lovely. My dish was then taken away and not even 5 minutes later my beef brisket was delivered, personally I thought this was too soon after my starter and was a bit disappointed the mains weren't held due to the time taken to have my soup. Pudding was lovely.

After our meal we asked for our bill and when we received it there was 3 drinks on it which we never ordered. So we sent that bill back. We then got another bill which still had 1 of the drinks on it. So we sent it back. Then we got a 3rd bill which looked ok, but then the waitress came over to tell us it was also wrong and gave us a 4th. At this time myself and Rach were just looking to settle the bill asap and head through to the bar then onwards around Glasgow. It was not massively inconvenient but was certainly a bit frustrating.

Later that night we both hit the hay and a few hours into our sleeps were both woken due to our room being roasting hot. Both the radiators were down at a low heat but the room remained very hot. We mentioned at breakfast to a member of staff to which he responded asking why we didn't contact reception but tbh the last thing I want to be doing during the night is giving myself any hassle like that. The continental breakfast we then had was lovely.

All in all a pretty disappointing stay and would have expected more from a hotel chain held in a very high regard across the country.

Afternoon tea

stelsbabies on 04/02/2018 23:36

Very nice afternoon tea in the hotels downstairs bar although a little expensive. Consisted of a mini burger, filled wrap, salmon bagel, fresh scone with cream, mousse and a selection of mini homemade cakes. Glass of prosecco and coffee. Staff were excellent, friendly, polite and efficient. Would recommend.

Noisy

smgallagher17 on 04/02/2018 19:17

Our room was small , creaky floor boards and woken every morning by the sound of bins being emptied , some staff were excellent especially Nick , others were just plain rude , breakfast was good and freshly cooked but I would not stay ever again

Odd atmosphere

I stayed two nights for business, and was surprised this hotel fell within our budget range as this is fairly low (normally stay in Premier Inns). I assume there was a special offer on, maybe occupancy hasn’t been great? Certainly seemed very quiet when we stayed. I find all Malmaison hotels a bit gloomy, as they follow similar dark design themes. It seems to be a mix of Art Deco and industrial minimalism. Anyway, the lack of guests meant the gloom felt a bit oppressive.

And although the room rate was surprisingly affordable, everything else was at full Malmaison cost: a very average rib eye steak on the bone for £32, for example.

The staff, though, were faultless. On the ball, efficient and friendly.

I wouldn’t say it was a bad experience, but not as good as it could have been.
