I recommend Mercure Jakarta-Kota

We returned to stay in Mercure Jakarta-Kota hotel last week for 7 nights.
The experience was very welcoming, warm and homely right from the start - from reservation to check out.
We really enjoyed the hotel staff's excellent service, personal touches and great hospitality. They were extremely helpful and always smiling.
Special thanks to Pak Jamal ( General Manager ) and his excellent team, Pak Sutiyono ( Duty Manager ), Ibu Gayah ( Reservation ), Pak Septa ( Restaurant ), Ibu Indah, Pak Upi, Pak Alam and Pak Daniel ( Reception ) and Umam ( Housekeeping ). Their personalised service and genuine smiles made our stay most enjoyable and memorable.
The Superior corner room was clean and spacious, the king-sized bed and pillows were very comfortable for a good night's sleep, the flat-screen TV was very large ( possibly 50" ) with more than 50 channels ( including HBO, Discovery, BBC, CNA, CNBC etc ), the Wi-Fi was fast, the coffee made from in-room coffee machine was great ( complimentary coffee, tea, mineral water provided ). The bathroom was very spacious as well. There was a lazy couch for relaxing, and a round dining table and two chairs by the corner window for enjoying coffee or in-room dining ( fried rice ordered via room service was great ) by the corner window.
The most awesome about the room was that it had a great view of the sprawling city's skyline during the day and dazzling city lights after dark. We just sat by the large corner window looking down from above, watching "miniaturized" pedestrians, motorcycles, cars, buses criss-crossing at the Jalan Hayam Wuruk-Jalan Mangga Besar junction below ( Jalan means Road ), while sipping our coffee and tea. We could see Monas ( famous National Monument with a flame or torch at the top made of gold ), high rise office blocks in downtown Sudirman-Thamrin CBD, Taman AnggeriK, Central Patk and Citraland malls on the horizon some distance away.
The location of the hotel is very good for us as it is near the junction of Jalan Hayam Wuruk and Mangga Besar, about 3 km from CBD and within the old town or old city centre area ( known as Kota ) of Jakarta, near Chinatown ( about less than 1 km away ), Kota Stasiun ( central train station, about 1 to 1.5 km away ), one of the most well-known landmarks in the area. There is a square among a large block of "amber-coloured" colonial-styled building a bit further from the train station ( about 1.5 to 2 km away ) where a large number of hawker stalls selling snacks, fruits, drinks, toys, paintings, handicrafts etc and street entertainers playing guitars and singing for a small tip. This place is bustling after dark. Getting there from the hotel is easy as there is a bus service ( known as Busway, with its own dedicated bus lane to beat the jams and the bus stop is right outside the hotel ).
Nearer to hotel, along the lengthy Jalan Mangga Besar ( left-left turn from hotel ) there are many choices of local food, be it hawker stalls or restaurants. One of my favourite is a small non-air conditioned traditional nasi Padang restaurant right across Jalan Mangga Besar right at the junction with Jalan Hayam Wuruk. Do not be surprised that the waiter brings the whole "menu" ( real dishes of Padang cuisine ), easily 15 to 20 dishes to your table at one go, as they only charge for the dishes you consume. The yellow curry chicken and rendang ( dried curried beef ) were very tasty indeed. For local fruit lovers, there are numerous stalls selling durian, rambutan and duku, as now is durian season. The area is bustling after dark.
Along Jalan Hayam Wuruk ( which runs parallel with Jalan Gajah Mada ), the main road to CBD and Kota Stasiun, there is a good Chinese restaurant, the Duck King, which is located about 150 to 200 metres from the hotel ( turn right from hotel and walk along Jalan Hayam Wuruk ). Their signature dish the Peking Duck and their Dim Sum were good. Opposite the hotel across Jalan Hayam Wuruk and Jalan Gajah Mada, Holland Bakery offers a wide variety of western and local pastries, such as breads, croissants, buns, egg tarts, cakes etc. Kuih Lapis, a famous layered cake, a local delicacy, was good.
Along Jalan Hayam Wuruk, Jalan Gajah Mada, and Jalan Mangga Besar, many convenient stores and money changers line the streets, so the area near the hotel is very convenient.
From the hotel, if you want to head to Sudirman-Thamrin CBD, it is very convenient too as you can take Busway right outside the hotel, which beats the jams. I had for a few occasions stayed in 5-star hotels in CBD but comparing the sights and sounds of huge shopping malls and high rise office towers, and the huge traffic jams in CBD, I prefer to stay in an area where I can really immerse with the locals and experience the real Jakarta.
Therefore I strongly recommend Mercure Jakarta-Kota hotel to visitors who are first timers to Jakarta who want to experience the real Jakarta like a local on free and easy trips, or even to regular visitors or business travellers who are looking for a good hotel with excellent service, great value for money, good location with authentic local foods.
However, there are perhaps rooms for improvements :
1. Minibar in the room was too bare. If more snacks such as Kitikat, Muesi bars, Oreo, Pringles etc would be better
2. The buffet breakfast was too local oriented. More variety of breads, buns, tarts would be nice. I like dim sum too but no longer served. I like toasts with jam but the jams were not the same as before
Perfect location and hotel

I Had a great stay in Mercure Jakarta Kota. The staff at the front desk meet my expectation. I got the room in high floor, clean, has bath up and surprisingly got an upgraded. Thank to Mr. Darno who handle smoothly during check in. And also Ms. Sembiring was happy to assist me. Location just nice. Building was ok. Old and fancy. I would like to come back here again with friends or family in the next trip
Room is big and shower is hot

Room looks a bit old but very specious. Shower is hot and powerful. Air con is in good condition. No bad smell. Only problem is less choices in hotel dinning but bunch of small food shops and restaurants at the next corner of the hotel.
On this Visit only, They've changed. So sad

Mercure Jakarta Kota (then I call it MJK) is one of my fave place to stay. With their affordable price on room, they could maintain a service of excellence. But, on this visit only, three nights stay booked on November 2017, I found a terrible experience with them. So sad.
So far, it was a nice experience to sleep in this four stars premises (based on what?...need to elaborate more on this rating stuff), with their well-maintained bath tub and standing hot and cold shower. Clean bed and stuffs, and cheap mini bar items (less than AUD 2 each), large bottled water and more than enough bath amenities. Their bath-tub is 'deep' enough for your body to sink in it. Perfect hot water with reliable water speed. Less than ten minutes to fill the bath-tub with water on intended level. These are the things I adore most from the premise.
However, my last visit had changed my opinion a bit about their service. I found, they 'reduced' the spread of breakfast into a half. I recalled, they used the spaces in the second floor on the west and south-side of the elevator as their restaurant to served breakfast. But, on my last visit, I realized that they only used the north-side of the second floor as restaurant to serve breakfast. By decreasing the space, and so the food servings. It has reduced into a half compare to my previous experience. I may find it exciting if they could maintained their food taste, at least, equal with they usually serve. But they could not maintained the taste of the food they served, I presumed. And it broke my memory on what was good on MJK.
Then, not simply enough with the discouraged food and restaurant, I've experienced their room service went bad. So bad, till i could not sleep well on my last visit. They did not make my room up. They left my room in a mess condition. As I left the hotel from 4 AM and arrived at 6 PM, I expected I could slept right away. But, hey ... I saw a messy bed with my dinner order was not properly 'return to clear'.
However, their staff were great. The front desk lady made a fast move to calm me down. Giving me a glass of guava juice (syrup) and ask their in-house manager (Housekeeping manager i presumed) to see me and briefing me about the situation. But, I don't know. Do you think, it is good to get mad if you face such condition? I had to wait for about an hour, before I could see my bed again. And I felt so tired at that time as I walked through 14 hours of work. So bad ...
Leave you to resume when you decide to stay in MJK. It is a good hotel with their service to excellence. But, warn them to make your room up and remind yourself to feel a different atmosphere with their food taste. Hope, you understand, this is subject to my opinion. You may experience different atmosphere with MJK.
Have a good rest in here
