An oasis in Varanasi

Contrasts within the hotel and outside their grounds could not be starker. This is a luxury hotel in every sense with a rich heritage of its own. Part of its charm is the authentic experience of times gone by!
A luxury hotel.

We heard a lot of good things about the hotel and its sprawling grounds and warm hospitality.Unfortunately we could not visit the place due to paucity of time.A must visit on our trip next time we are in Varanasi.
A peaceful haven in the heart of Varanasi

Varanasi is an intense city....but as soon as you enter the premises of the Nadesar Palace you leave all that behind even though it is located within âeasyâ reach of both the airport and the Ganges although, like many cities, the roads are very busy and chaotic!
The welcome is very special with conch shells being blown and petals thrown over you.
The history attached to the Palace is very evident as soon as you enter with a long list of notable visitors in days gone by.
The hotel only has 10 rooms which makes it even more quiet and peaceful....a fact which is further reinforced by the staff who are âpresentâ but so discrete, courteous and respectful. My son arrived in Varanasi with a stomach bug and the staff could not have been more concerned about his health and what they could do to help.
Because if itâs size, the menu is a little limited but the quality is incredible and all freshly cooked and served really hot.
The grounds are extensive at over 40 acres but are beautifully manicured. Itâs well worth taking the horse drawn carriage round the grounds, if only to listen to the man who leads the tour as his father and grandfather both worked in the Palace before it became a hotel.
My slight gripes would be:
1. Our room was very comfortable but it was adjacent to the outside dining terrace. This meant it had no natural light as curtain were permanently drawn over the doors and it also meant the prospect of a lie in was limited as people came to breakfast.
2. We were not told the Gateway hotel next door was owned by the Taj and that we could visit their restaurant.....whether or not we would have done this, it would have been good to know we had the choice.
Overwhelmingly though a lovely hotel and a great tonic to the intensity of Varanasi.
Quite exceptional

We arrived a little early for our two night stay and our room wasnât ready. For the first to ever we were offered horse carriage tour of the grounds to pass thetime. Were told it was the one Queen Elizabeth used and the coachman was the third generation of his family o be the coachman at the Palace. The grounds were extensive and well tended and well worth a visit.
Our suite was very large with a large day sitting room, a large bedroom with four poster bed, a large bathroom with towel warmer (??) and a gigantic terrace, which was shared with some other rooms, but we never saw anyone, but then again we never used it.
Service throughout the hotel was of the highest standard, efficient, friendly but not presumptuous. We dined in the hotel on our first night. We wanted to dine in the open air but the three tables were taken, it was no problem, a table was immediately moved and we were still some way from the nearest diners. The setting was wonderful overlooking a fountain, the gardens and a white marble summerhouse in the distance. The food was excellent, although the menu was a little limited. In fact the next night we fined in the sister hotel next door, which has a more extensive Indian menu. Although the food was good, unfortunately it tends to cater for large groups and the noise level was awful, one immediately realised why one was paying the extra for the Palace.
One of the nicest things about this type of hotel in India is once the gates close, one leaves behind the noise and mayhem of outside. In the case of the Nedesar Palace, this happens twice, first gate from outside and second gate from large scale tourism. Inside is perfect peace and tranquility. Quite lovely.
Beautiful people of Nadesar Palace

The hotel is of course stunning, but it is the people who make it truly special. The staff were all very gracious and attentive, and although we were only there for one night, we made many connections I will take with me. A special thank you to Dheeraj for the thoughtful yoga practice in the morning-I was in very good hands. And speaking of hands, Hussain at the Jiva spa has amazing healing hands and I particularly recommend the Champi head massage. Thank you to Padma for arranging everything.
Other people who made our stay special included Nasim, who took the time as part of a carriage ride to introduce us to all the trees, plants and produce growing on the property, and the musicians who both played beautifully and attempted to teach us to play their instruments (even harder than you can imagine).
Overall a beautiful oasis in Varanasi.
