Ossoor Estate was founded in 1861 by three intrepid Englishmen Mr. A. Mockett and his cousins, Gen. C. J. Green and Col. H. Green on land granted by the then Maharaja of Mysore. They struggled against all odds, yet succeeded. They bought more land, brought in more Englishmen, chief among them Col. W.L. Crawford, Mr. E.L. Young and Mr. R. Radcliffe. These gentlemen not only established the coffee industry in India, but ensured that they would be forever remembered by building hospitals and schools for the local population. The Crawford Govt Hospital and the Young Govt School still exist, as does the Crawford Hall in Mysore University. Radcliffe donated 30 acres to the Govt Research Centre in Sakleshpur which even today, does critical research for the betterment of the coffee industry.
