The positives:
The approach and facade of this hotel is truly beautiful.
The setting on the river is romantic.
The main building with check-in and restaurant is elegant.
Our room was a huge sitting area and large bedroom.
The hotel has a nice spa and indoor and outdoor pool.
Breakfast was good.
The negatives:
The color of the guest rooms -ugh.
The noise from the parking lot (trucks backing up) in the middle of the night woke us up every night.
The staff is not nice.

This place was a delight from the moment we pulled into the parking lot. The grounds, the river, the restored palace, the repurposed factory was as if out of a movie.
The common areas are in the 18th century, lovingly restored Baroque palace. The bar is not to be missed as their selection of ports is probably the best in the world. The rooms are across a courtyard in a beautiful old factory and they are beautiful, modern and comfortable. The building has been totally rebuilt from the original shell inward and the quality of the materials was impressive. (As a group of architects we can attest to that.) Our room had a wonderful view of the Douro River and we felt so lucky to be seeing it in both the evening glow of sunset and the morning mist. We were saddened that we were only there for two nights and would love to go back and enjoy all the comforts again.

We asked reception to book a table at a restaurant to listen to fado and we were booked by reception staff in a restaurant room without fado
When we complained (twice), staff showed clearly they did not care
This is an unacceptable attitude for a 5 stars hotel
We will not recommend this hotel

beautiful luxury castle. Their New Year's Eve bash surpassed the most elegant and fun weddings I have attended in New York. The food, service and ambience was over the top. Fantastic experience all around!

A lovely hotel, well located for the tourist. Service was exceptional! Clean, accommodating and very friendly. Hotel staff is very tuned into quality and pride of workmanship. A must place to stay while in this city.
