Stunning buffet lunch, disappointing overall

We has a day pass to visit this hotel (which is quite a drive out of central Oman) as on this occasion we were staying with a relative. However in comparison to our previous stay at the Chedi (well there is no comparison if you are wanting a 5* stay).
On the plus, the location is great, the day pass includes lunch and the buffet was stunning, food fab.
On the negative, service poolside and in the restaurants was very slow (including dinner in the Tapas restaurant).
The hotel is too large, too sprawling and having travelled extensively (including to other shangri la's) Oman needs to step it up. I'm glad we didn't book to stay over.
Excellent location and Hotel

The location and views are unbeatable, picture perfect surrounded by mountains and sea facing in a shape of C, the layout of the hotel is also excellent. The view from the room was also beautiful. The check in and check out was smooth. THe restaurants were good and located by the sea , tried Al tanoor which had a great buffet spread for dinner , there was live music being played combined for two restaurants. the rooms were great with all modern amenities . The breakfast spread was excellent with several options. Difficult to find fault with the hotel and services. Will highly recommend this hotel.
Fabulous location but unfortunately incredible failings from the top down....

So Iâm lucky to have been invited to stay at the beautiful Shangri-La to attend an event â the event was perfect with great people and many business opportunities discussed. The event was well supported by staff and by the end of two days many knew my name which is of course a nice touch. The location of the Shangri-La is only what can be described as spectacular â surrounded by mountains and the beautiful Oman coast.
Unfortunately though there were a number of issues, below is a summary of most:
1) Upon check in I was allocated room 2241 in Al Bandar â not an issue until the other issues but 2241 is approx.. a 7 minute walk from the reception.
2) Upon check in I was given my keys and I was greeted by the event organizer CEO who wanted to meet me personally to thank me for attending. We spent an couple of hours enjoying a beer discussing life and an the event schedule. Perhaps we spent a little too much time together because before we knew it, it was time for the welcome dinner. I had back to my room to âfreshen upâ only to find the keys do not work. I take the long walk back to reception and was helped by a very nice young lady by the name of âManâ. She escorted me back to the room and in that time I was able to get to know her as well as you do with someone chatting for 5 minutes.
3) Man helped me access the room and showed me around â first impressions were clean (this will change) but dated. Second impression where is my luggage? I had after all be in the hotel for two hours by now. Man was super apologetic and managed to get the missing luggage delivered to me within the 7 mins that it takes someone to walk from reception.
4) Dinner was great with lots of networking and laughs, the location was amazing and the food spectacular so someone for sure is doing a great job in F&B!
5) When the night ended and I was ready for much needed sleep I had the same âkeyâ issueâ¦. So back to sleepy reception I go.
6) Finally Iâm back in the room â after quick shower I open the curtains and the door to enjoy a well deserved rest. It is now that in the beautiful Omani moonlight I notice the amount of dust on the chair (which by the way takes up far too much room in the room) â to me this is not 5 star!!
7) The next day I again visit reception; requesting to speak with someone, we move away to a discrete location. The person I speak with doesnât seem to want to listen, which Iâm sure people can agree is somewhat frustrating. All I hear are excuses and no solutions, I swear not directly at her but describing my intense level of frustration. Interestingly in subsequent discussions with whom Iâm told is the GM Iâm told by him âhis parents brought him up correctlyâ â interesting approach here! Anyway we agree that its not right and that the âdusty chairâ shall be removed from the roomâ¦.
8) After a super busy morning and lunch I return to the room to escape the event and to have some âme timeâ. The good news here is that the key works but that chair is still in the room more than 6 hours after agreeing that it will be removed
9) I phone reception and a very nice chap arrives 10 minutes later to remove the chair â now the chair is gone yalla, halas!
10) Dinner is great â its in a fab location called âTurtle Beachâ with a wonderful band playing! I think youâll be able to guess what happened after this most wonderful night of laughing⦠Yes when I arrived back to the room I was unable to access it.
11) Now the situation is laughable because before going to the room I went to reception to ask then to check that my key was working to which I was told âyes sirââ¦. So upon my return to reception (yet again) I demanded that someone comes with me to the room to let me in. Funnily enough he had two âprogrammedâ keys that didnât work a master key that didnât work and finally the forth key he tried worked. By now I was ready for some sleep and thanks to the hotel I probably missed out on a few hours in total.
I donât think I have missed anything out above and in summary; some amazing people work here, some others donât seem to have a clue. The food and location is wonderful! The hotel rooms and facilities have not aged well and are in need of a thorough refurb and modernization â WIFI was sketchy and unfortunately today we all expect to be connected everywhere. I think my account is fair and Iâm interested to see the response of the GM to the above but as consumers we should all be able to make an informed decision. Itâs a real shame because I have stayed at this property before but I will not be returning ever again. I wasnât a consumer in this instance I was just lucky to have been invited. And finally Iâm writing this from a newly opened 4* hotel where I was greeted be organized and what seemed motivated staff and Iâm delighted to say that every time Iâve tried to access my room Iâve been able toâ¦
First day problems ⦠part 1 review

I am here on my honeymoon with my husband and arrived 2 hours ago.
We booked through hotel.com, where it stated we would have a 24 hour shuttle to the airport. I tried to email the hotel yesterday only to have the email bounce back. Arrived at the airport and called the hotel ⦠25 minutes in total on hold over 2 calls. The first one I was on hold for 15 mins plus and then cut off. This was all at international roaming charges. Informed there was no shuttle.
On check in asked to speak to the manager
He diligently took down all details and said he would investigate, also took copied of the emails from hotel.com etc.
He informed us he would upgrade us. Went to our room and was disappointed, looks worn and old, although perfectly clean. Our standard of room is the same he gave us a sea view as opposed to a pool view. Disappointed considering it is our honeymoon and the problems we experienced.
Will feed this back and see if they do anything else to compensate us. currently in room 3158.
Difficult to fault!

Wonderful staff made this visit quite exceptional- management please note! The staff at all levels but particularly in the restaurant were absolutely superb.
We were there for one week.
The hotel is a bit isolated but that didnât matter.
Our only suggestion would be to organise a brief welcome/orientation meeting also allows one to meet other guests.
Like other comments drinks prices are exorbitant and discourage early evening relaxing drinks pre and post dinner.
