Basque elegance in every detail

A hotel which is located near Guggenheim museum could not be just like something ordinary. Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao absolutely corresponds with this criteria.
An atrium design inside, modern decoration, big enough and comfortable room - everything was so familiar as it was our second staying there. A receptionist told us that renovation had been made there - was it the sky the limit for Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao, who knows? Window view for wet Flower dog and Guggenheim museum itself was so astonishing even throughout rain drops.
Another important part of the hotel is its restaurant. After checking in we found it out almost overbooked by the locals for lunch. Many thanks to Hugo who offered us to be seated at the bar until one of the tables becomes available. Fish soup, hake in Basque style with white Marques De Riscal and finishing by Brownie - we had two times, the second one just after Atletic - Alaves football match.
After having visited Guggenheim museum we found out that Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao interior has been made the same way - with elegance in every detail.
Waiting for the third visit - we hope so.
Wow

Picked this hotel from TA reviews and so surprised. We enjoy really good hotels so have a catalogue to compare.
This hotel compares in my view with the best.
Arrived in the car a the front entrance. Young man came rushing over to enquire if we where staying. Directed me to the entrance at the back of the hotel where he was awaiting our arrival with a luggage trolley.
Unloaded the car, took the keys and escorted us to reception. Upgraded without request, another young man took our bags to the room only after the reception had taken us through a map of the city in asked.
The room was excellent an luxurious. No view but we where only staying the night.
Didnât use the restaurant so canât comment.
In the morning we walked to the old town for breakfast and returned late morning to check out.
They brought our bags from the room and loaded the car. What a surprise to find two fresh bottles of water in the cup holders.
I have paid 3 times the price and not received service like this.
Bravo, you deserve all the success you will undoubtedly achieve.
If you read this review and stay anywhere else I would be surprised.
A Truly Special Experience

I feel remise submitting this review several months after our stay. I canât say enough about the Gran Hotel Domine. Our situation was very uncommon but our stay at the hotel was truly special. My husband sustained an injury on our first day in Bilbao. He was rushed to the hospital via ambulance. When the hotel manager learned of my situation (being alone as well as unfamiliar with the city, the medical system and the language) he sent the Guest Relations Specialist to the hospital. Miren was a godsend. She stayed with me in the emergency room waiting area as I made phone calls. She interpreted for me and she explained the processes and procedures in the hospital. Miren went to the hospital with me the next two days in order to interpret when I spoke to the doctors. Miren showed me how to ride the train to the hospital and she helped me cancel the rest of our hotel reservations for the balance of our trip. After six days, my husband was discharged from the hospital to our hotel room. The staff, who had gotten to know me, warmly welcomed my husband. Miren brought home-made chicken soup, made by her mother, to our room that night. We stayed at the Gran Hotel Domine for nearly three weeks before my husband was cleared to fly home. The room was absolutely beautiful, comfortable, and extremely clean. The view of the Guggenheim is astoundingâthe hotel is directly across the street. The ambiance throughout the hotel is lovely. The food was wonderful, both in the restaurant and on the rooftop terrace for breakfast. The housekeeping staff always cleaned our room when we went upstairs for breakfast because they knew we would spend most of the day in the room. The breakfast staff brought us a different small treat each day. The front desk staff happily scanned, faxed and emailed forms for me. The door attendants always greeted us with smiles. On our last day, we had to leave the hotel at 4 am to catch an early flight. When we checked out, we were given bags of food that the restaurant staff prepared for our journey home. For three weeks--during a very tough experience--Bilbao became our neighborhood, the Gran Hotel Domine became our beautiful home, and the hotel staff became our family.
Wonderful hotel but let down by some important details

The hotel really is very lovely but my visit was spoilt by first of all a fairly lack luster reception. I felt the receptionist was slightly irritated because she had to stop the conversation she was enjoying with another guest and colleague to check me in. She was ever so slightly surly with me. Not helped that she handed me a piece of paper to sign and quickly scribbled out the rate being charged to the booking agent which was considerably less than I paid to the third party. I was annoyed as I had actually called the hotel directly but they would not match the price so I booked through the agent. It was silly as they would have received more!! I asked if there were any Guggenheim view rooms available - there were not - which was fine. I took my key and went to my room. The room however was like a prison cell. There was no window visible. The window was at the very corner of the room in a strange slit that you would need to squeeze down to see out. I canât recall if it was exterior facing. I was pretty annoyed by this. I went to reception straight away to say that it was not acceptable standard for a five star hotel. The same surly receptionist informed that was the room that I had paid for. She begrudgingly had a look and found another room. This one looked out onto the atrium. Whilst I appreciated there was no guggenheim view rooms available, I expected an outside view and fresh air but many of the rooms look out onto an interior atrium. You needed to keep your curtains closed otherwise other rooms would be able to look straight in. Back to the same problem. The view was of a stone pillar. I gave up at this point. But the receptionist, who had walked me up to my room was very argumentative and still kept insisting I was getting what I paid for standing at the door and trying to convince me I should be satisfied with what was on offer when clearly I was not. I had to say that I didnât want to discuss it any further in order for her to leave which she did ungraciously. The room itself was very clean with lovely crisp linens on the bed and very nicely appointed. The bathroom was also nice but you did need to be some sort of contortionist to be able to put the plug in and run the bath. I could not manage without spraying myself and my clothes with the shower!!! Amenities were very nice White Company products. The next morning, the new receptionist was completely charming, smiley and happy. Could not have been nicer. I went for breakfast which was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented with high quality foods. Buffet and a la carte choices were available. The staff were friendly and efficient. Overall it is a lovely hotel but the lower-priced rooms come with problems guests should be aware of. It was a shame I had a bad experience with the less than charming check in receptionist which set a poor tone at the start of my stay and for being totally unapologetic for giving me a clearly one of the worst rooms in the hotel. Oh - and she also made a thing about pointing out another room with a non-window âslitâ on the way to my second room saying something like -âthat is like the room you had - there are guests in there but they are not complainingâ . Really not cool or acceptable for making a guest feel bad for saying they are not happy.
Such a Great Place

Really enjoyed our 2 night stay here right before Xmas of 2017. Perfect location to the Guggenheim, literally a 3 min away. Well decorated rooms, great public areas with contemporary feel, and good service. One thing that impressed me was we asked where to park the car and they said, you can park it here, but it's actually cheaper in a lot someplace else. Of course we ended up parking at the hotel since we were leaving early the next morning, but I appreciated their honesty.. One comment from a local we met was - "All the Americans stay there" which is good and bad. We took the trams to old town, and it was about a 5 - 8 minute hike to nearest tram stop (seems longer on a rainy dark night).
