My wife and I flew into Auckland to commence a planned three week trip covering both islands, and noting the very nice TA reviews of Sky City Grand Hotel, we spend our first two nights here.
After the 20 minute or so drive from the airport, we found reception area staff to be very personable and efficient. We had emailed prior to our arrival that we would have liked to have been afforded an early check-in, but acknowledged that this might not be possible, and indeed with the hotel evidently having been quite full the night before, this request could not be met....earliest 3:00, though we were "in the queue". Be that as it may, we left our bags with the staff and when we arrived back at the hotel later in the afternoon, our bags were waiting for us in harbor view room 1805.
As others have mentioned, this is a very nice lodging on a par with some of the best Marriotts in which we have stayed. Nice sized room, VERY comfortable mattress, rain shower head and nozzle spray options with decent water power and good temperatures, though it was curious that it usually took almost 20 or 30 seconds for tweaking of the temperature knob to have its effect on the temperature. The bathroom had great shelf space. There was a bath we did not utilize. The view out the window was pretty "cool", as we could see the base of the Sky Tower (looked like the bottom of a rocket), and further along, the harbor and bridge. The room temperature was easily and efficiently controlled via the thermostat. Having the daily newspaper left at our door was a nice touch. The WiFi was adequate, not especially good bandwidth, but since had not planned on doing any real time streaming, it met our needs.
We tried to make good use of our time in terms of dining, not wishing to travel outside the hotel. The Federal Delicatessen was perfect for a basic lunch, and dinners at The Grill and Gusto (separately reviewed) were absolutely fantastic. Although reservations proved unnecessary for Gusto, they clearly are mandatory for either The Grill or the restaurants across the way in the Sky City Casino Hotel, which can be accessed via the walkway from the 5th floor of the Grand to the 3rd floor of the Casino.
The hotel was conveniently located in terms of harbor cruises, though alas our Tiritiri Matanga cruise was cancelled due to rough waters.
As such, we can wholeheartedly recommend the Sky City Grand as an extremely comfortable hotel with friendly and efficient staff...who could ask for anything more?
An Oscar's Evening!!

Hi there,
My partner and myself stayed at the Sky City Grand Hotel in Auckland last year .... just for one night. I am a movie buff (and he likes to humor me) so we went away for a one-night stay to have an Oscars Party (just the two of us!!!). We had never stayed there before.
It was wonderful. He had checked that they definitely had the channel that broadcast the Oscars ceremony.
The room, when we walked into it, contained a large kitchen area, with kitchen island etc. Fridge for the the snacks that I had bought for our Oscars celebration as well as copious amounts of wine. It is the Oscars after all !!!!
A huge tv screen on the wall was awaiting us! Complete with a huge comfy 3 seater sofa. There was a separate bedroom with a huge king bed. Beautiful sheets. Sunken pillows that I was so tempted to steal. And a fabulous bathroom with an AMAZING shower. It was so AMAZING that I have to repeat myself. The bathroom was huuuuge. Best bathroom in a hotel that I have ever been to. And as a Flight Attendant and adventurous traveler in my previous lives I have experienced many bathrooms. This one was .... Quite fabulous.
The view from the lounge was quite something. I had a brief experience channeling Kim Novak in Vertigo..... because I had blimmin Vertigo from standing at the precipice of the window. The window is from the top of the ceiling to the bottom of the floor. You walk over to it and you can see so much of of Auckland, no matter where your room is placed. It's quite a sight.
After the Oscars had finished we headed to the lovely pool and did some lengths to burn off the wine and cheese. Lovely pool. No one else but us in it. They had a spa too.
Got back to the room and ordered room service, which was pricey but delicious. Fabulous efficient service from the staff.
Slept so well. Fond memories.
If you want to be spoiled, for perhaps a couples away weekend I can thoroughly recommend this hotel. For one night to be spoiled can make such a difference.
Very welcoming and friendly staff

Great hotel, very friendly staff. Great facilities. Rooms very clean and tidy with comfortable beds. Very nice bar with loverly cocktails will definitely return on our next trip to Auckland. We had a late a flight on the day of check out, staff offered late checkout time and full use of the pool all day.
Great to use as a base

We did like the location of sky city it was close to everything. The only major challenge is they put us on a low floor over looking 2 on the loudest nightclubs in Auckland. The room was a good size the breakfast was good. But dont expect to get any sleep between 11 and 3 pm. If you are a party animal then join in if not insist on a higher floor away from the night clubs.
Outstanding customer service

We stayed at the Grand for out wedding night early February, 2018. Our wedding was in Auckland at our home but we wanted a special place to stay after our wedding. We didn't want to just stay at home on our wedding night, so booked the Grand Hotel online. I (the groom) also wanted to get ready at the hotel so that I didn't see my bride before the ceremony. Since I had to be at home and ready for the wedding to start by 2pm, I had to check into the hotel early. I put a request on my online booking for an early checkin. I got a call (missed the call), a text and an email from the wonderful Alison in guest relations, saying that even though the hotel was fully booked the night before, she would make sure they do everything they can to have a room ready for me at 12.
I arrived at 12 and got such a warm welcome at reception! They knew who I was, that it was my wedding day and they indeed had a room ready for me! When we arrived back at the hotel at about 11pm, there was chilled bubbles and a lovely card from Alison waiting for us in our room. For a one night stay, that was exceptional service in my book! Alison is a guest relations star and deserves a promotion!
The rooms at the Grand are really nice rooms, the location was perfect, valet car parking was very courteous and efficient, and over all the hotel is beautiful. Amazing art work everywhere, if you are into that sort of thing!
I can't speak highly enough for the Grand Hotel and would enthusiastically recommend it to out of town visitors, or for locals looking for a nice little getaway for the weekend. Thanks for capping off out special day by making us feel special at the hotel as well!
