We went through the concierge to book a private driver and tour of Hobbiton. My husband was very clear that we needed a driver, a private tour and return. Our driver showed up and didn't introduce himself. He then said he had to stop on the way to do something at the office, and then we would make a pit stop if anyone needed to use the bathroom. He stopped at a very weird looking building that looked more like a home with bars on it (like it was in a bad neighborhood). He said he had to pick up a log book. He then kept driving and stopped at the rest stop without asking us if we needed to stop. After stopping, he asked if we needed to use the restroom, and we said no. Then he said was going to get a cup of coffee. By this time I was ready to tell him to go back. I called the concierge and said he stopped to get a new log book because he left his in the car he drove last night which was in that car, and not the car he was driving today. He could not confirm a tour of Hobbiton, lunch and a private guide. Nothing was going right. The concierge said he was sorry. We decided to continue and I told the driver (who had told us he wanted to start his own business) that 1) he should know the names of his customers when he picks them up and should greet them, 2) he should give them an itinerary of what is ahead for the day or at least confirm it with them, 3) if he leaves his log book somewhere, he should get it before he picks up his customers (turns out the log book was NOT on the way--he must think we are stupid and 4) he should not stop for his own coffee if we don't need to stop--and if he does those four things then maybe he can start his own business. When we got to Hobbiton my husband was able to arrange for a private guide and lunch due to the stars aligning properly in our favor. It ended up being okay, but I would never, never use the concierge for this. Go to a private travel agency instead where they use reliable drivers who are competent. This whole day cost us a LOT of $$, so it should have been done correctly. The hotel sent us a cheap bottle of champagne as a consolation--but, hey--I don't drink.

An excellent hotel. Superb rooms with comfortable beds and good bathrooms. Breakfast and evening meal are excellent value for money. Staff are always courteous, efficient and unobtrusive.
The hotel is in an excellent location for the main shopping areas and harbour. We did a trip around the harbour as well as visiting Devonport via the ferry.

Lovely hotel with super staff- they treated us like royalty. Great food, nice pool.
I will stay at any stamford hotel - in fact on this same trip I stayed at a Stamford in Sydney and a Stamford hotel in singpaore!

The best part of this property is the location. The deluxe room was a good size and bed was comfortable. Some sound proofing issues from adjacent rooms. Breakfast was poor quality and served in the open lobby making it feel like an airport. Big bus tour groups mean service feels more transactional. Some investment/a makeover would bring this property back to its former glory.

Lovely efficient staff, clean tidy room. Great sleep in a fantastic bed. Buffet breakfast was great but stay away from the sausages. Rock hard. Six of us had breakfast and we all left them. Also water from the water dispenser tasted as if the dispenser had previously held something else and not been cleaned thoroughly.
