Worst place I've ever stayed in, owner refused to refund
Nick C on 09/11/2017 13:44
If booked to stay for 2 nights in order to attend a wedding that was taking place nearby. As soon as I arrived I knew I'd made a mistake. I was told that the kitchen wasn't open on weekends so no evening meal available. I was shown up to my triple(!) room - even though it was just me staying and my heart sank. There were three single beds in a row in the room and the whole place looked tired, smelled bad and made me instantly depressed. There was no way I was going to stay for 1 night let alone 2!
I gave the keys back the guy behind the bar and told him I'd be back in the morning to talk to the landlord and ask for a full refund. That night I managed to get a room in The Richard Onlsow - just down the road which was perfect.
I returned to the hotel the next morning where I met the landlord. I told him that the place was not of the standard I was expecting and that I wanted a full refund. Unsurprisingly he refused and couldn't give me any credible reason other than "its already on the system". So, that's £135 that I feel like was basically stolen from me.
The landlord told me that I was being rude when I complained - i had just told him that I'd rather sleep in my car that in his hotel. He also tried to explain that I shouldn't expect a high standard as it's a 'pub with rooms' not a hotel! WTF? I stayed in the Richard Onslow which is a pub with rooms and it was great! Also - it's actually called "The Cranley Hotel" - so that's what I thought it was!
Anyhow, I'm getting more irate as I type this so I'd better stop and go and clam down. To summarise:
Never EVER stay here
The landlord was miserable and unhelpful
I feel robbed
Just to reiterate:
NEVER EVER EVER stay here.
AVOID - DO NOT STAY HERE

Is the Cranley Hotel a hotel, I am sure it was at one point, over the years it is now become no more than a public house with some letting rooms above; rooms which have been left to deteriorate without any investment over the years that they are now rundown and certainly not worth the money that the apathetic and dispassionate management and owners consider is the right price to charge.
Rooms that require upgrading, management that show no concern that guests are running riot in corridors and rooms at 03.00 am disturbing and alarming other occupants (you call the emergency number and no one answers) and a bar which is so unclean I am sure that you would be unwell if you ate or drank anything from the kitchen or bar.
I write this review reluctantly however the management and owners have been given amble chance to contact me and address my worries and concerns but they could not be troubled to do so.
Please avoid, there are much better places to stay in the village and they charge the same prices as the Cranley.
Very basic and NOT an hotel in the accepted sense

This "hotel" was selected because of its proximity to friends we were visiting - only a 15 minute walk. The building is well over 100 years old and in the right hands would be a very pleasant place to stay; but it most certainly is not unless your reasons are similar to ours. A double room was booked well in advance and the fee taken at the time. The room we were allocated had 3 single beds which were comfortable if narrow. However the room had more the feel of a flophouse than an hotel. The single glazed windows would neither open nor close, window catches were broken and the locks painted over to the point that they were ineffective. The carpet was stained and a pain of glass in the shower room was broken and covered with a piece of cardboard. There was some black mould in the shower but the unit worked well. Towels were old and washed almost to death. Stair carpets were threadbare in places. Lighting was dim probably in the hope that guests would not notice the state of the "decoration." One of the bed side lamps did not work. Because of its proximity to the main road it is very noisy - secondary double glazing would cure this. The whole place has an air of dilapidation and clearly has not been touched in many a year.
So much for the negatives of what I could see, doubtless there are more. On the positive side, the staff were welcoming and friendly and the breakfast was good.
Rubbish, crap, rubbish

My work colleagues and I stayed at this hole in the earth for one night and it was one night too many.
The rooms were dirty and had an old damp smell that hits you like a brick as soon as you walk in the door .
The shower had no pressure and went from ice cold to hotter than the earths core every few seconds.
Lots of noise from the road so makes sleeping very hard , if it wasn't for the noise then the most uncomfortable mattress that you will ever sleep on will keep you awake anyway.
My advice is to get drunk so none of this matters.
The breakfast in the morning was not edible and was served by what I can imagine is a human being but through all the grunts and noises proved a hard question.
Never stay here
Single person, double room, three nights

So...single glazing + busy road = extreme noise, poor décor, tired and 90s style, flimsy furniture and no work table for laptop = no chance to get any decent business work done . No extractor fan or window in bathroom (is that legal), windows in bedroom don't open but in winter why would you = ????
Music in bar played loudly until 11pm each night; doors into bar slamming as people come in and out - not good if you are above it and downright rude. Not what you pay for. No chance of working or getting early night. This is described as a 'Hotel'.
Food - asked for salad instead of chips. Got - first of all - a look of disbelief - but you're a bloke and you lot always have chips - followed by - iceburg lettuce, white cooking onion in sliced rings and tomato. Mmmmmm!!!! Gammon steak was like rubber as it was cooked in the microwave. Next night the Steak pie had not been cooked for long enough so the steak was chewy and tough. Frozen Oven chips instead of freshly cooked? I mean come on ....
Service non existent, almost like I was an unwelcome distraction. At breakfast, the waitress just put up Xmas decorations instead of checking on tables. Did I want more toast, more tea or coffee? Maybe clear the plates or find out what I was doing that day. Interaction? Pretend to show some interest in customers? Very, very poor.
I could go on, but let's leave it as: approx. £200 for 3 nights. Good value? £200? Nah. Note to self - Must fill out accommodation review form at work and circulate to all regional offices. Do not ever stay at .....
