Awesome service with very friendly and service oriented staff. Unique compound on top of hill with lushly green landscape made my stay very comfortable, calm and peaceful. One of the best Indian food restaurant with plenty of local and international choices from the menu

We stayed here for one night as part of a private tour, in room 48. This is a hard place to review, as although we didnât particularly like it, we accept it is probably the nicest and quietest place in Madurai! Probably really a 3.5 review, then.
First, the positives: the hotel is centred round an old colonial-type building on top of a small hill, with nice grounds and a nice view over the city of Madurai. The accommodation was in various modern blocks scattered round the grounds. There was a large pool and a spa. The hotel was quiet, especially welcome considering the chaos that is Madurai!
So why did we not really like it?
The hotel had a general feeling of neglect and lacked modernisation. The toilet next to reception was quite grotty and gave a really bad first impression. The reception area was small, and there was a tv on in the bar area which spoilt the ambiance there.
The carpets were frayed and faded in the steps leading to the reception. Our room was reasonably sized with wooden flooring and decently air con, but no balcony or outside space. The taps in the bathroom again looked past their best.
During the day the hotel was very quiet as presumably most people were out on a tour. The map given by the hotel was useless, and the restaurant area âvistaâ was not easy to find. Staff were pleasant enough but not especially attentive by the standards of other hotels we visited. The inside of the restaurant was very cold (air con on too strong) and had a buffet aimed at tour groups. We ate a la carte and the food was reasonable and the view from the veranda was nice with a cooling breeze.
Overall a reasonable average place for a short stay in probably the nicest hotel in town, but a long way from the highest standards and rather surprising that it is part of the Taj group of smart hotels.

Beautiful hotel with spacious comfortable, spacious rooms, and highly efficient, gracious staff. Central building is an old mansion form the Raj, with the newer buildings that fit beautifully into the landscape and mood. Hilltop location with lovely views over the city from the rooms.
Top tier service

My spouse and I spent 4 nights at the Gateway. We stayed in a spacious, clean room with a city view and adjacent open, covered common area. The staff were exceptionally kind, attentive and engaging. While there we were particularly impressed by Chef Alwin Aâs team. Each night the Chef made us feel most welcome and conversed with virtually every patron
to ensure each meal was delicious, to individual tastes and preferences. We also took advantage of Chefâs first rate cooking class to learn more about local cuisine. Finally, both the Security Manager, Mr. Ajjikuttira and General Manager, Mr. Nair were extremely helpful when my spouse required the consultation of a medical doctor. These gentlemen ensured we received prompt, professional assistance and follow up. Big thanks for service above and beyond.
