The Sint-Salvator Cathedral, the main church of the city, is one of the few buildings in Bruges that have survived the time without damage. Nevertheless, it has undergone some changes and renovations. This church was not originally built to be a cathedral. It changed in the 19th century. Since the 10th century Sint-Salvator was a common parish church. At that time, the Sint-Donaaskathedraal, located in the heart of Bruges, opposite the town hall, was the city's main religious building, but the French destroyed it.
In 1834, shortly after the independence of Belgium, a new bishop was established in Bruges and the Sint-Salvator Church became a cathedral. However, the exterior image of the building does not look like a cathedral. The construction of a higher and more impressive tower was one of the viable options.
The roof of the cathedral collapsed in a fire in 1839.
The Neo-Romanesque western tower is 99 meters high.

After taking a long walk around the city we stop at this Cathedral and it was really nice to see how much work they have to offer to keep up with the inside and out around this beautiful place and the Cathedral was nice and well worth the visit to come inside and see the big statue and the nice pictures all around the great place

Truly beautiful Cathedral and massively underappreciated compared to Church of Our Lady - this is a real must which is currently being restored but they are keeping the authenticity which is missing from the Church of Our Lady. Very peaceful and beautiful windows and architecture.

construction on going. smaller version of cathedrals but if you are passing by better go in. you can take one of 2 photos and move on to you next stop.

Passed by while walking around the town. Nice building in the nice town. At least worth to walk around.
