I bought a last minute voucher on groupon to include dinner and wine. I read the reviews which were pretty mixed and decided to give it a go.
Positives first: good location. Easy to walk down to the beach front or cliffs and to go into town. It clearly was once a nice hotel and like a lot of Scarborough is now a bit tired.
Dog friendly
Negatives: I booked a double room and the bed was two singles pushed together In the night I rolled into the middle and had awful backache the next day.
The walls in the room were dirty. Pretty sure there was snot up the walll! And the toilet could do with a good dose of bleach down it.
We had to eat in the bar because of the dog which of course we didnât mind but the inclusive menu is pretty awful. Only one choice for vegetarians which was served cold and frankly was so awful we didnât eat it but went and got a pizza instead. When we asked for an alternative as neither of us like goats cheese it was like we had asked for the moon. The staff were awful and unhelpful
At breakfast we were just told our table number and sat waiting for coffee which no one told us was up on the buffet when I eventually clicked there was no service at all I found none of the coffee machines worked there was just silver thermal things which were empty. The buffet breakfast was ok ish. No pastries and the toast came through the machine still white.
We bought passes for the pool etc but didnât get time to use them so canât comment on those facilities
The entertainment was old fashioned hi di hi. But to be fair the man had a great voice and it was songs my mum bought me up on and who doesnât love the oldies after a few rubarb gins!
So in conclusion in general staff are awful, room was very tired and the snot on the wall was a big no no for me and despite paying for dinner we had to go and get a pizza and didnât even get coffee with breakfast but itâs cheap in a good position.
Dead Seagull in bathroom!

Yes, a dead seagull. On arrival 1st impressions are not bad, you can imagine in its day it would have been very elite. Unfortunately not on my visit. First room we were given was a little hard to find, no one too escort you. Room found and it was a compact double but looked okay, until we attempted to open the bathroom door. The door seemed to be wedged, at first we thought is it hitting off the bath. The door a jar I popped my head round and to my horror noticed a whole in the ceiling, mud and bird poo in the bath, ceiling tiles on the floor stopping the door from opening and a huge dead seagull on the floor.
I swiftly went back to reception, explained the situation and an unsurprised member of staff said how long or you staying! No apology - no empathy just how long are you staying. Our room was changed to a much larger double & although it was cold it was okay, no dead seagulls. The food we had at the dinner dance that night came out in good time and hot apart from the yorkshires they were cold but nothing a bit of hot gravy couldnt sort out. Overall experience disappointing
Royal Hotel Scarborough

This is an old Victorian hotel in a lovely place in the town. If compared to a basic 3 star hotel on Spain or Italy it struggles with service and food. It is very dated in many of the high footfall areas.
We found the table d' hote to be ok but it could have been served a bit hotter. Drinks were reasonably priced, but the bar area and restaurant were very cold and I was told that there had been problems with heating for many months before our visit. The one thing that an Emglish hotel in a popular resort in winter shpuld get right is the heating, enough said.
We will not be returning

As my mother would say: this hotel is all fur coat and no knickers.
We got a £65 deal on Groupon. This deal included one night stay, breakfast and dinner with a bottle of wine. Perhaps this is when alarm bells should have started ringing. They have lost 3 stars from us for the following reasons:
1- the place is dirty. We had to be moved rooms because there was some kind of disgusting mess in our bathroom.
2-food. The dinner felt like canteen food, frozen reheats etc. The bottle of wine included was totally undrinkable. Breakfast was very poor. The coffee was un-drinkable, the bread/pastries were stale and the juice had been very obviously watered down.
3- pool/facilities. I have never seen a more disgusting pool changing room than the one at the royal. While the pool was nice, the changing room was completely unacceptable and the steam room was out of order.
The reason they havenât got fewer stars from us is because they did deal with our complaint about the dirt well and moved us to a nicer (if still a little dirty and dated) room. And because itâs hard to not be impressed by the entrance hall and dinning room etc which are all decorated beautifully. While the communal areas are lovely the rooms are dated and shabby and not clean on a whole.
We will certainly not be going back to the Royal Scarborough.
Well done âºï¸

After our first unsuccessful stay at the royal we were offered a discounted stay and a free upgrade....
Wow was just purfect the room was amazing nice and clean.
Breakfast was lovely tho felt the poor chef was working on his own and run ragged always had a smile on his face.
Would be nice to think that the standard we received was what all customers got when booking and not just after a complaint as I would gladly stay more often.
