Rocky treasure beach

This is not a good swimming beach. The beach is all coral and can't be walked on bare foot so wear your water shoes! On this beach you will find awesome treasures like lava glass and coral sculptures and shells. This was a really neat beach to comb. If you don't want to sunbathe but you want to explore come here!

We found Holoholokai Beach Park while exploring the Big Island in early April. It's located behind a big hotel just off the main highway. The beach itself is pretty rocky and not really suited for swimming. The park has resrtooms, barbecues and tables. We saw a local family enjoying the sun. There are also open field for playing, plus a trail that leads to the petroglyphs.
Sunsets, BBQ, and Petroglyphs

This was a park we walked to daily when staying at the Fairmont Orchid. Loved this park, we enjoyed just hanging out under the trees on the soft grass. The restroom facilities are clean, the park is small and it was never busy. Not necessarily a swimming beach with sand to lay out on, but it's perfect for walking the rocks and finding small pools with sea life. One night we BBQ'd, and just enjoyed the sunset. We had some whale activity viewable from the beach that night too. It's also the park / beach where you can access the Petroglyphs. Great spot to check out and spend some time.
"Out of the way" beach park

Not a wide, sandy beach so if that's you're thing go to Hapuna.
That said, this one is tucked in behind the Fairmont Orchid and we just stumbled upon it while driving around the area looking at things (hah).
It's very pretty (the beach is stony but the rocks are a mix of black and white so it's very striking) and the waves on the rocks were mesmerizing to watch. There was one or two sections that might be okay for wading (with sandy bottoms, even) but it's not really a "get in the water" beach because of all the rocks.
It is, however, a very nice place to have a picnic and enjoy the surroundings and it's right near the petroglyph park.
Beautiful.....

A beautiful area, and nicely maintained, (decent restrooms).
Very rocky, which makes the breaking waves even more enjoyable.
Even with limited mobility, one can maneuver along the water for a ways; though actually entering the surf could be difficult.
There are several shaded picnic tables, easily accessible, with nice views.
A great find; and when we were there, not crowded.
