Nice evening meal but breakfast and room awful

Stayed for 3 nights, the room was basic, no chair, mirror, no room to hang towels etc. The tiny TV Was filthy, as was the shower room, covered in black mould, the toilet roll holder was broken and on the floor, the sink hardly big enough to wash your hands. The evening meal was very good but the breakfasts were inedible, everything greasy and overcooked, with toast made from Value bread, very poor!!! However, the staff were very pleasant.
Poor cleaning of rooms, but breakfast ok

I stayed here with a couple of colleagues for one night. We arrived quite late and had to wait a while for someone to sort our keys out. The rooms are in a separate block across a dark car park. I was in room 7,upstairs in the first block. The room had obviously not been hoovered as there were bits of gravel all over the carpet. The bathroom really needed a big deep clean, there was damp on walls and ceiling, black in all the grouting etc. However the bedding and towels, though old, were clean. There was a kettle which you couldn't really get into the sink to fill up, I only needed to do one cup at least. Teaspoon wasn't particularly clean.
Breakfast was to order and tasty.
Amazing food and service

Decided to try the Vale after hearing of a refurb and new chef, we certainly weren't disappointed, The food was very tasty, and the service was great, highly recommended. We will be coming back at a later date :)
Great Value Accommodation

We stayed here for 2 nights whilst visiting our daughter in nearby Ripon. When we searched for accommodation on a well known website this was the cheapest in the area. Whilst I admit some of the decor needs updating and is a bit 'tired' what we got was a warm welcome, a large room, comfy bed with crisp, clean linen, a good tv, a hot shower and more tea/coffee/sugar/milk than I've ever seen. If your in the area and need to organise a stay on a budget then the Vale Of York represents great value accommodation.
House of Horrors

Firstly I will start with the good points. Check in was a pleasant easy experience. The breakfast was good and waiting staff at breakfast friendly and helpful. Ideally situated beside train station and near racecourse where we were visiting. The bed linen and towels were clean. The room was on the other hand was dreadful, our double room had 3 single beds, our view was the bins at the back of hotel. The room was dirty especially the bathroom it needed deep cleaned, there was no bedside light, tea stains up walls, wardrobe stained and some dodgy looking stains on valance sheets. Unfortunately all hotels close were full so we had no choice but to stay. We asked staff in bar to order a taxi to go to racecourse to meet friends in the evening and got a very frosty response, she stated no taxi would come for us and even on us asking for a taxi number to call ourself she said 'it's only up the road' like we were stupid. I don't see why it was the bar staff's choice! We were utterly disappointed in the whole experience.
