What People are saying

package deal

It was our first time in Portugal and could not have been more delighted to have ended up at this hotel. Fantastic service, the staff spoke English, the rooms were immaculate and the attention to details was commendable. The hotel itself was so beautiful, the food delicious (although small courses for dinner) and the breakfast was varied, all of could not have been to a higher standard. We really felt we were looked after extremely well. The Spa is a fantastic addition. Loads of space and everything to a very high standard. Would definitely recommend.

A Perfect Winter Break

We booked this 70 room, 5* hotel through Fleetway as the deal appealed to us in all respects. (almost all the guests staying in cold grey January were through Fleetway). The hotel is very lovely and imposing. It boasts a gorgeous staircase, beautiful grounds, a golf course and fabulous spa. We were met at the airport by a hotel representative/driver in a well stocked and immaculate car. The Reception staff were delightful and friendly, in fact all the hotel staff were friendly. Our room was on the first floor, it was quite small and stuffy, but very tastefully decorated. Great bathroom with an abundance of fluffy white towels, Molton Brown goodies, dressing gowns etc. There was a turn down service. TV and sound system were good. Breakfasts were superb with a great choice and beautifully laid out. The bar lunch was average and quite expensive and the evening deal (selections from a 2 course set menu) worked for us and changed daily with sufficient choice. The standard of cuisine was extremely high - very modern Portuguese, appealingly presented. Wines were pricey but very quaffable. The spa was something else - especially when you have it all to yourself. Sauna, steam room, pool and outdoor spa with gloriously warm water. There is also a well equipped gym. I had an excellent facial too. We did the Douro day tour - just the two of us. Angelo drove us and guided us. The tour was pricey, but did include an excellent 5 course lunch with pairing wines, a boat trip down the Duoro (we were the only people on the boat/river) and a private tour of Sandeman's Port estate with tasting. What's not to like! All in all, a fab 4 days. Go on, spoil yourselves.

Expect the expensive

My first trip to Portugal to the salubrious five star Vidago Palace arranged by Fleetway Travel was a treat I looked forward to. The hour travel from the airport to the hotel by hotel car was very enjoyable and the driver was knowledgeable and chatty. The hotel's exterior is imposing and vast although inside it feels smaller. Immaculately clean. All staff spoke excellent English and were very attentive. It was obviously quiet at this time of the year so I rarely saw any of the guests except at the abundant breakfast. The food choices otherwise, for a vegetarian were limited, although they made an effort once informed, but there wasn't a real range of inspired dishes. The range was either high end restaurant where you are compulsorily included into the two course menu and with your allowance of 20euro, it's only going to cover one course. You pay for the water as well. The other option for me was the bar food which was adequate but not inspiring. The organised trips were disproportionately expensive and geared for couples. The classic double room was small for two people, so I was thankful I was travelling solo, but I enjoyed the french windows and balconies to both bedroom and adjoining bathroom. Nice touches such as a speaker in the bathroom from the tv/radio and unlimited free bottled water in the rooms, clean linen and towels every day, replenished toiletries every day, turn down service with some evening biscuits were all very welcome. No kettle in the rooms alas. The grounds are lovely and I noted some awards for their golf course. The best thing I had was a tai chi lesson on my first night. The tutor was exceptionally kind and accommodating. A bargain at 7 euros. Overall, I feel I was financially penalised for travelling solo and therefore the short break cost too much, even though the hotel is rated five star.

A Brief Touch of Luxury

Elegant well furnished hotel, beautiful room and old fashioned bathroom well equipped with toiletries. Nice grounds for wandering. Really helpful and friendly staff who take a genuine interest in looking after you. Excellent buffet breakfast, wide choice. We visited on a special break package and the dinner table d'hote menu is limited, just two or three starters, choice of fish, meat, and vegetarian, i.e. just 3 dishes and similar limited dessert choice. You can upgrade to a dish from the a la carte but the main courses are around 32-34 euros so I think the supplement worked out around 15 or so euros. Good quality ingredients and well presented. The setting of the banqueting hall for dinner is most elegant, breakfast is in a separate pleasant restaurant.

Excellent spa, indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, jacuzzi, steam room and the like. Range of thermal and other treatments with 40% discount at certain times of the day.

Another review mentions the background music throughout the hotel. This is not intrusive and at least it is classical music in the banqueting hall although lighter music in other areas. It did not really detract from all the positive aspects.

The town of Chaves is just `15 minutes away and worth a visit to the Castle, River, Roman Bridge and the narrow streets.

Overall an excellent stay and I almost forgot to say a great choice of wines but mostly quite pricey!

One night in December

Very good and cosy refurbished hotel. It realy feels like living monarchy ancient times.
Good restaurant and surroundings.
On the bad side: poor breakfast for a 5 star hotel. Rooms are too hot inside.
