this is the WORST hostel of my one month visit in new Zealand. asked for NZD50 deposit when my one night stay only cost NZD22. wifi payable @NZD6/day. poor location- far and sloppy road from city centre-sky tower.

Very nice hostel to stay In Auckland CBD. The building is pretty near of all the touristic spots in Auckland, so you can go everywhere from there by walk. The place is pretty quiet, and the staff very kindful. Recommended!

We stayed in a private twin room for three nights. Overall Rock Solid was a great hostel. The room was quite spacious and the bathroom was especially good. Shared kitchen was big and was very clean and accommodating. Staff were lovely and helped us when we locked ourselves out. A minor drawback was the slight clinical feeling as not many people were there and there were no windows in group areas. We would definitely recommend it!

My experience at the YMCA hostel was quite good. The toilets/showers were really clean and tidy, and really appreciated that they had blow dryers. Unfortunately when three friends and I arrived the cleaning staff had forgotten to do our 4 bedroom dorm, and we were therefor upgraded to each our single bedroom. Really loved the service.

Very clean and friendly service. Nice bathrooms and lounge
But unfortunately the noise was quite intolerable. As indicated by management in response, some degree of noise is the price to be paid for centrality. However, my room being near a kitchen, there was constant noise from other guests and sometimes the kitchen was not locked when it was supposed to be (10:30pm to 6 am - and 6 am seems too early anyway, for a kitchen located on a floor with bedrooms). As a result I was often kept awake and woken early by kitchen users
Further, construction is underway at the site next door. One night, sheets of metal were being tossed around all evening until ymca staff finally asked them to stop at about 11:15 pm.
The $8 charge for the continental breakfast is excessive.
